Applications: What is legal and what is not?

Hi folks,

Im in arguement here or rather not arguement but a fierce disagreement.

Some applications are being filled out online and gives an optional "survey" thingy to be filled out, really its more of like a phyicalogical questionere asking some personal behavior traits.

Each question is rated on a scale of Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree and Strongly Disagree.

Examples: Do you find people that talk alot annoying?

Do you like to get involved in other peoples personal problems?

and many other stupid questions like this that you would only find being given by a professional counselor or phycologist.

Is it legal for companies to be asking such informaton?

Disagreement stands that I say this is totally illegal. and he says that its legal and its an optional quesionere but if you don't fill it out that they will just chuck your application in the garbage because survey quesionere was not filled out.

I stated so If i go to the store myself and apply rather than do this online and ask for application they are gonna give me another packet with all these personal quesioneres to ask? he maintains yes and i said no, that is flat out illegal. they can not ask for personal info nor ask for a pycological profile to be filled out.

So what do you say guys and gals?

Legal or not?

What kind of applications are you talking about?

Oops I just read the poll,,

Yes I think they do have the right to ask for this kind of test to be filled out. Keeps psychopaths out of the desk next to you..

I kinda lean towards the business side of things. But subjective things like that do bother me as well. Principle is fine, but I would fill it out unless I had something to hide. Simply because it increases your chances.

hit the high moral grounds after you are hired and help them see the stupidity from within. Or deal with the media if you don't get the job.

The employer is going to find out the answer to those questions anyway, so it seems logical to make the answers known beforehand.... probably will save both parties some headaches

I also think that not filling it out would show the future employer a real disdain for authority by the applicant..

But those tests are baloney.. you know what the answer should be even if that's not how you feel.. Lie on the test then just take your hand gun to work later after you're pissed off.. by that person talks too much.

Well I do see ya all's point of view. Some of the questions made sense but some of them were downright IMO against reasonable questioning.

I got nothing to hide its just that a few of the questions seem downright illegal. I'd have to go through the application process again to just get the exact questions I was thinking of that I thought were in violation.

If you are uncomfortable answering the questions, then you may be uncomfortable working for such an organization.

Well he went in for interview today, different company, he did not apply online. and after the interview they had him do a grammer test, spelling test, couple other test which I belive are standard. but heres the kicker again, He had to fill out a 33 page phycological test. Average about 10 to 12 questions per page. the one online wasn't near as long. So basically the company was say to him that if he doesn't do all these test including the phycological one that he won't be considered any futher. He filled it out anyways.

Im totally flabergasted. Has getting hired for a job really changed that much? the criteria?

So the world has changed that much huh?

Well, I'm a hardcore freelancer, but my sister has had to change jobs every couple of years, so I get to hear about the latest wrinkles.

Working for a company has never been about Democracy....and the people who pay for your time have increasingly weird notions about what they are entitled to, in terms of personal info.

What that means is, we are becoming a society of fear-based people. Everybody wants a guarantee, a warranty, some kind of shield against chaos. Totally in opposition to the nature of the universe, which, by its very NATURE, is BASED upon chaos!

Ships sink, planes crash, and Postal workers get crazy. It's all about some fearful little people trying to hedge their bets, and very little about your personal info. What the hey.

Fill out the freakin' form. It IS the norm now.
