do you regret being a nerd?
when i say non nerd i refer to non knowlege based people, yes i do realize there are popular smart people but it is VERY rare.
i was thinking about this... the guys i hang around with are cool and popular, i hang around with them but don't really fit in perfectly because i'm a nerd.
i've looked at my cool friends and wondered how their lives are but always revert back to wanting to be me because i'm the only one of all of them who has a definite plan for life, knows what job they want (EXACTLY) and is never concerned about school because it's always a breeze while they work their asses off just to slip through.
my brother is popular and he's a stud, he's deemed good looking by everybody and he holds social poise and has the ability to just walk up to somebody he doesn't know and just start talking. from a distance it looks like my bro has it pretty sweet but i've noticed that since he just can't stand to learn stuff, he has to work his ass off working like 11 hours per day 6 days per week just to make as much as what my dad makes working 8 hour days 5 days a week on flexable hours (they don't care when he shows up, as long as it gets done).
with all the non nerdy people around me in my life, there is always an aura around them of uncertainty and the worries of "what will happen next" and they don't really know what is going on in life... none of my friends know anything about computers, not 1 of them knows what Linux is, not one of them has a clue about politics and most of them have no clue what major world conflicts are really about such as middle east thing, the taliban, WW1 and 2 and stuff like that.
if you are a nerd, do you actually regret being a nerd?

I am not a geek, I'm a nerd. I like being in that position because I am always needed. Teachers, friends, and family always need my help with PCs.
I will just say one thing. for some reason, when people learn that I'm a computer nerd, they're always like "ah so you're into porn"...I don't know why that is. it's even with people I just met. I'm getting very tired of it. I have been made fun of sometimes by my "cool" friends, but in the end they're always beggin for help.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm.........I don't know "what" I am....I go into all kinds of hobbies because I get bored easy. I never abandon a hobby. That helps me learn a lot and become kind of a jack of all trades so I can converse with people on many things.......in addition to always having an interest in history, politics (to attempt to inform myself when it comes time to vote) and world issues. To put it simply, I don't like being in the dark on anything
I voted "i'm not a nerd"........being "smart" is all relative. To somewhat answer your original question, I don't regret being who I am

bah geek.. nerd whatever
Personally I prefer geek lol
I dont' mind it, I have a good job.. I wasn't great in school but that's not where my "skills" were born anyways... it was all on the job (with the exception of the actual fundamentals of programming)
PC's, Networking, and the actual languages I use in programming I learned 100% on the job or just toying around with machines at home.
What does kind of bug me, is that friends I talk to immediately stereotype me as being "uber" smart as folks around here would say just because I can fix a PC
I don't think I'm any better than the next person.. I just have skills that I can do in my area, just as they have their own areas they excel at... but noooooo because I work with puters I'm smart lol
just cracks me up

i flaunt my uberness with big words like 'lethargic' 'nestalgic' 'niggardly' (see other thread for details) and i wrote computer programs in high school during spares.... just simple things like calculators but it really helps you remember how stuff works |

Im not a nerd, Im a geek
isn't it true that you are a geek if you are very passionit about something, say computers for example.
IMO a nerd is someone who is very "brainy" you know the stereotype look with the Glasses with a bit of tape on them the pen holder in the front pockect etc
Anyone remember that movie Revenge of the nerds?

I tend to agree with the definition Vert, I like geek myself. Like Warto, I have many hobbies. I got into computers from my love of music, recording and production. Seeing the ease and quality the computer brought about it seemed the likely choice for digital music.
Then I found the internet now I'm a geek
I don't even fit in with my old friends anymore
I think cool has many levels, and I'm just too cool for them now

I agree with vert - I'm a geek not a nerd. I may wear glasses and hearing aids, but it's because I'm blind and deaf, not socially inept!
Since I'm on the national association executive committee for my profession, I can't say I'm reclusive
So, mickwish.is-a-geek! (got that domain from dyndns )
Nothing there yet, but I'm ready!
Cheers
