Well, I don't know what happened to the old thread, but when I search for my nickname, only 5 topics come up! Somehow my post count says differently, but anyhow...
My school had been blocking AIM, ICQ, even IRC etc. Any type of text based chat was essentially blocked.
Well, I found that under AIM, if you set it to use an HTTP proxy server on port 8080 or port 80 (where all the web surfing traffic goes), but didn't specify any server, it seemed to force AIM to packet its info through either of those ports and in a way an HTTP proxy server could understand (I ain't no MCSE, I don't know exactly), and it slips right on through the block nicely.
However, the downside is that for some reason, doing the identical thing in gAIM doesn't bypass and it's as slow as ever, so I have to run AIM in Linux with wine instead.
So anyhow, I've so far set up or instructed around 8 people how to bypass it, and they're also passing the word on.
The beauty of it is that I don't think our networking people would be able to stop it as long as it's on the web port...
Sam
EDIT: Note I don't mean it couldn't be done, just I don't think they'd be smart enough.
