We Were Soldiers - no spoilers

Just saw this last night...

Truly amazing movie, on par with Black Hawk Down - that's A LOT for me to say because BHD impacted me tremendously. BHD effected me a bit more because of being set in a modern era and I read the book. The message was the same in each - leave no man behind...

At first I thought the beginning of the movie was kinda slow, developing story line and depth in the characters....of course, in the end, it made it all much more personal. As soon as they step foot into the hell of Vietnam I never took my eyes off the screen....By the end of the movie my emotions were much effected. I related it to the recent devlopements and decisions being made on Iraq and how we better make a good decision.

Gore level - more detailed than BHD and very necessary, IMO, to get the point across.

I like movies based on history, such as this, because it makes people understand...they go beyond simple entertainment. Even my sis - who hates learning about history - was asking questions about Vietnam during and after we watched it.

I bought the DVD today for $20 @ Wally world

Thanks Wart, I've stared at that movie several times at Blockbuster video...I think I'll pick it up this weekend. I heard there's a lot of story told of how the wives back at home play a part in the big picture--is this true?

yeah martoch it is, it was indeed a very good movie
I was really skeptical going into it, but was pleasantly suprised.
They did show the framework of support that wifes created on the military bases back home.

The realism of the movie is unequaled, IMHO.

This is really about the battle that set the tone for the whole Vietnam war.

The director's comments and deleted scenes make the DVD worth getting. I'm sorry that they deleted even one of those scenes.

While I agree its a good movie I dont agree its on par w/ BHD. BHD had more gore IMO, unfortunatley. Not that Im into the gore factor but the scenes in BHD where a guy gets his legs blown off or the medic has to dig in a leg to get a artery is very disturbing. The begining of WWS is gruesome, after that I just dont see it being as violent as BHD.

I hope I dont spoil anything here but the dvd featurettes do mension that they wanted to hit on the stories of the families. And they did, however I believe you only really get to know Mel's character and his family. As far as I remember you dont get to know the other soldiers very well. They also wanted to hit on how much each other (soldiers) meant to each other. They didnt do this as nearly as much as BHD down did or even Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers, but Band of Brothers was a series(which BTW will be on DVD soon).

I have seen BHD down several times as I bought the DVD unfortunatley. A new disc is scheduled to come out soon and I think it comes in 2 or 3 dvd's. I dont think the first BHD dvd is worth buying and I REALLY dont think WWS is worth buying as they will release a better version in about 4-6months. Argh!!! I hate when they do that. Greedy bastards.

Yeah but that's 4-6 months away? I knew that about BHD dvd when I bought it....but I wanted to see the movie many times now, not in 4-6 months when I'll be in training.

I don't believe BHD had specific shots of people getting shot in their forehead and blood coming out the back. The two scenes that really made me think it was more gorey: In WWS, the scenes where the guy got severly by napalm and his skin was coming off, and when another guy got hit in the face by a phospherous grenade and had ultra hot pieces of metal stuck in his face.....maybe it was the specifics of the wounds and not "just" bullet wounds that made me think that.

try--Behind Enemy Lines

If you liked "Soldiers....." because it was accurate history don't miss Behind Enemy Lines. It's also based on fact. Great movie. I'm sure you will enjoy it also. Same moral-leave no one behind.

I saw BEL and thought it was much more of a traditional action movie than anything else. The parts that were facts was the mass slaughter of innocents, that's for sure. But after the scene where the SAM chases them for nearly a minute (lol, the motor only burns for 3-4 seconds at most), I began to lose interest. The whole 'TopGun'pilotego thing didn't work for me either because that is the opposite of what those guys are in real life...most are in their late 20s/early 30s and are highly professional. And since when did fighter jets go on patrol by themselves? Oh, and the multiple scenes when the main character would get 3000000000 bullets shot at him and never get hit

Traditional, hollywood action movies are great....action movies that try to be realistic are not great
