Politics makes me sick.

I have always thought Massachusetts governor Jane Swift was incompetent and worthless as a leader. And I have always felt that Virginia Buckingham never should have been appointed MassPort chief, but this story makes me understand a little better what she (Buckingham) went through and exemplifies everything that's wrong with politics, especially in Massachusetts.

Nothing has changed in the past year. Political advantage still overrules safety, security, and the common good. Makes me sick.

I don't feel bad for Buckingham. She shouldn't have accepted that job in the first place. She was woefully underqualified. And as former governor Weld's campaign chief, she surely pulled her share of political dirty tricks. What goes around, comes around.

What disgusts me about the story is how the media and other politicians reacted. I don't believe there's a single politician in this country that would give up his/her political career if it was in the best interests of their constituency to do so. Political survival is paramount. All other considerations (with the possible exception of personal wealth) are secondary.
