My thoughts: Leaving reliance to forces other than our own inner resources and self-will means that one is not taking control or responsibility for one's life.

You can believe what you want; what you believe is your destiny will likely become your destiny.

Other than (or perhaps regardless of) uncontrollable outside events and not being able to control others, I believe the concept of our own destiny is based on individual choices which we make and change, not as something over which we have no control.

I think we pretty much fulfill our own self-prophecies.
