Time limit on recalls?

My parents recently bought a '94 Ford Taurus GL wagon. It has started to develop problems with the transmission. It won't shift out of the 3rd gear, regardless of the RPM's or gear (OD or D).

There are apparently a number of recalls applicable to this car. My question is whether or not there is a time limit on recalls issued by car manufacturers?

Some do and some don't. They may have already been done by now. A dealer can use the VIN# to see which ones have been done.

I dunno, but if he doesn't happen to see this, you could try PMing Ed_S. He works for a Ford dealership, and might have some info that could help.

Hi, Willy.
Sorry to hear about this. Let me tell you first that I'm a parts man, NOT a technician. So I'm not the best at diagnostics. But I'll try with what I DO know, OK.
Six cyl? That'll have either an AXOD-E or AX4N trans. Sounds likely that shift, o/d, or torque convertor solenoids were the start of it. I'd have to look up that year to be sure, but I recall them as being internal, on the valve body. I can check tomorrow, if you like.
Unfortunately, most of today's trannys damage themselves once something starts to go wrong. Sounds like that's happening. I'd recommend getting it looked at quickly, before the trans is beyond repair. Try not to drive it, if possible. It WILL destroy itself eventually, and you don't want to wait that long - it's a 2K unit!

Regarding recalls & "owner notification programs" (Not the same thing, but few people realize that)
Safety & emmission recalls usually do not expire. Ones that simply extend the coverage period DO. Any service dept can run the VIN through Ford's comp system in a matter of minutes & print out anything "open", or anything recently done. I can have it done if you want, PM me the VIN and if possible, a fax #

I don't know of any programs that would apply here, but again - I'm a wholesale partsman, and at our store the wholesale operation is in a different building altogether. I haven't set foot in the shop for months! Point being that I'm not totally "up to speed" on current recall info!

LMK what happens, OK?
Ed
