Greece VS Video Games

Why did they ban video games in public?

I heard about the ban of all video games from any public place including cyber cafe's. The ban even includes electronic Chess.

WTF would they do that for?

Seen it in my boys. They get addicted to this crap and that's all they want to do. If I was the chief, I'd ban all video parlours/cyber cafes/video games/those black boxes or whatever (Sony/nintendo kinda stuff) and impose heavy fines on those who make and peddle video games. They are no better than drugs for younger minds.

Do you concur?

how do you figure? i've had plenty of very educational experiences while playing games.
-fasctination about playing Counter-Strike made me want to run a server for it. i was pointed into the direction of Linux which i had never heard of before at the time. i tried Linux once and i was hooked. although the game server flopped because of my slow connection, i still stuck with Linux and learned more about it.

i joined a clan in Counter-Strike and i told them i would make the website for them. i already knew a bit of HTML (reading Mozilla Composer's sloppy HTML) so of course to live up to an expectancy i bought a Perl book and a PHP book. although i suck at both, i still got the basics to them and simple switching and form input worked.

i promised i would run HLstats for the clan i was with. this is a stats program that uses perl to connect to a database to input data sent by game servers. i had to install Activestate Perl and MySQL then use MySQL for a bit. although it was minor use, i can still say i learned basic MySQL admin commands.

Maybe they're worried video games will cause people to forget the name of their country is spelled G-R-E-E-C-E.

I knew a fellar in my old quake clan. Our all exhaulted leader and founder. By age 13 The kid had already made a website that would rival some of the best ones I had seen. He knew more about the puter than I will probably ever know.

i don't think that video games as a whole are bad for kids. i DO agree certain games (*cough*GTA3*cough*) are most definitely not suited for minors, but then again that's why they are rated "M" for Mature (who da thunk it!). i think that the public is just mis-informed about games. games are jsut like movies, some are good for children, some bad. It should be up to the parents to decide what's good and what isn't. something i've noticed is that parents don't pay any attention to what games they get their kids. A friend of mine used to work for Virgin Records, who also deals games. he was working cashier and a mother came up with her son (maybe 10 or 12) with a copy of GTA3. He asked her if she knew what types of "references" were int eh game and when she said no he told her about the game, and of course she wouldn't let her kid buy the game. most retailers don't care tho, they'll just sell it anyway.

I have seen some great things come out of these games. Web design, computer configuration, troubleshooting, research, computer assembly from kids that are but 12 or 13 years old. It is not the games that are bad. It is the all what you make of it.

I mean is addiction to baseball any better. Yea people become physically fit but mentally dull. Done in moderation most things are generally ok. Conversly almost anything done to with extreme fanaticism is usually bad.
