ok, let's "pretend" that I was driving my dad's car at 5mph into a driveway. While the car is still going forward, for some stupid reason my stupid hand decides to touch the stupid gear handle and slide it to the stupid parking position. On its way to the stupid P it goes through the stupid R (reverse) and the stupid engine makes this stupid "crack, crack, crack" noise for a short 2 seconds. (now remember we're just pretending ) To make sure that I didn't brake the car, I I turned on reverse and the car went back, ok. I also tested the car in D, and it works ok too. WOuld I have broken anything by my stupid "pretending"?

I'll just pretend that that's the best way I ever heard of to crush an automatic transmission.

But hey, maybe you got lucky, and will be able to pretend you did that again!

Most autos will slip in reverse if you're rolling forward. Same with park. It'll make that click click click noise. It's not good for it. Not at all. But you probably didn't do any permanent damage. I've done that with a work truck where I used to work. I'd throw it in park at about 10 miles an hour. I loved that place. I got fired.

The noise you heard was you grinding the parking pawl ratchet.

If you damaged that, the car might not remain in park, particularly while in park and the motor is running, and particularly while in park on a hill with the motor running.

Be careful.

Yup. Always use the parking brake. These things are known to fail when brand new.
