hmmmmmmm I think I might pick up a book about Judo tomorrow

I hopefully can teach myself some basic takedowns...I completely understand the best way is through a teacher...but with Basic coming up in 4 months and the (probably) lack of availability in my area...I'll have to wait until after training.

Besides, having something to work with in a fight is a LOT better than nothing, or rather my own way of fighting which I doubt would be effective

Eventually combining Judo with something else sounds liek a workable technique

According to the Krav Maga website, they use it in our armed forces for training and in police forces...I would presume I'll be learning that then

It's not just MP, but a career in law enforcement, whether state or federal, that this stuff will help me out greatly...also, general self defense *cough*bar room brawl type things

If I do become a State cop, there is NO WAY I will be one of those overweight d00ds you see everywhere...bah...makes me sick.

BTW Martoch...what is it you do in the Air Farce (*winkwink:P) that requires you to have your own fighting techniques

Warthog will be badahs

Maface:

Yeah, we sparred, after a few levels of training. Full speed, but not full contact, there would've been corpses around

Our teacher said it to be 'light sparring'. So it wasn't too serious, but sparring anyway

Real moves, yes, and whatever else we had learned during the training (we frequently got training in shootfighting and some eastern art - which seemed a bit brutal as the moves always ended in killing the attacker :|)

socalgal, Wing Chun is a nice informal style, and also very suitable for both genders and all ages. Unlike some styles in which taller, stronger folks have a good advantage (one of the reasons I found Tae Kwon Do difficult), Wing Chun, as suttonian emphasised above, concentrates on technique more than power.
I'm 9st and about 5'8", and used to spar with 6'+ 20st nightclub bouncers in my class on equal terms, so there must be something in it

Legend has it the system was created by a Shaolin nun, Ng Mui, hence she could not rely on physical strength alone for her defence.

The page I linked above does have a US contact listed, but I imagine on the West Coast you have the pick of some excellent instructors (as well as some pretty flakey ones ). Like any teacher-student relationship, finding someone you respect and trust is the most important start to successful learning.

Give it a go

Hi, if u r gonna try WingChun make sure u do some research on the guy who is gonna teach ya. Cuz, there are a lot of people who go to certain 'Wushu Kungfu WingChun Classes' Which are basically run by novices who will teach u very basic, or incorrect forms.

I personally think WingChun is the best. It is without doubt the most practical form of KungFu, (I mean would you really like to do Drunken style, or Monkey style Kung Fu...U see it u wouldnt want to do it !!)

All other Kung Fu focus on animals like the bear, Praying Mantis etc...Wing Chun is based on the human body. Once you know how to keep relaxed the power comes naturally...(some call it Chi)

The human skeleton and muscles are looked at. Punches are not a trivial matter. The way the elbow is positioned, how the fist forms, when to form the fist, what knuckles to use, why u have to use the triceps not the biceps are all examples of the scrupilous detail and perfection Wing Chun teaches in its first Basic Punch.

Take a few lessons with a good teacher and you will see the true magnificence of this form.

Size, Sex doesnt matter for this Martial Art. Infact this Martial Art is the only Martial Art made by a woman...(A 16th Century Nun created this martial Art who taught to a lady called Wing Chun, who beat the local Chinese War Lord infront of her whole town on the day she was to be forcefully married to him!!)

However, if you do like weight training etc.. it can be beneficial as you can have more power in your punches etc.. But, as in my classes there are a variety of different people who are from dfferent ethnic and cultural backgrounds, different Sex, and Weight. We do have beer belly peeps here too who fight exceedingly well. I my self am around 10 stone and have no problems

Some of the Senior Students look like extremely weak pushovers
, but once you spar with them you know u dont mess with them!!

I hope noone i know is reading this!!

Any way hope that fills the gap for some info on my fabulous MArtial Art... this is a martial Art you should all at least have a few lessons in.
