I've been interested and wanting to get involved in some form of martial art for awhile now. Wing Chun sounds very cool..

I'd like to quote my last instructor:

"I cannot guarantee you will win a fight after taking my class. I still cannot gurarantee it years and years later. All I can do is change your instincts through training, because once that fight starts all thought, planning, strategy go right out the window. The best you can hope for is that your instincts don't let you down. Human instinct tells us to flail our arms around aimlessly, charge like a bull, and maybe tackle. Essentially, we re-program you."

I like the use of the word "program". Now it easy to see the connection of computer lovers to martial arts. We love to "program" - even ourselves!

Did some cage fighting.
Study Ju Jitsu, Mauy Thai, JKD, Wing Chun and some Bi-Kenjutsu and Judo.Tried aikido but couldnt manage the softly softly approach.
My best advice is to try any martial art that you can as no one will give you complete knowledge and to many people today follow only one art and deride all others.
Cross training is the way.

Excellent system, it was meant for real life situations and didn't include much of the mental stuff eastern styles do.

Curious do you spar when you learn this? Do you do the moves for real? full speed?

Went to a Martial Arts class for a while here. Got involved pretty heavily, became a yellow belt. The instructors were great and the people were awesome! Unfortunately, I don't remeber any of the vocabulary except through anime-induced flashbacks.

Unfortunately, I don't go anymore because it was a 30 minute drive and I have a busy schedule. For a while, a VERY busy one.

It was great while it lasted though. One of my best friend went a year before I went and he says he loved it too.

I studied Isshinryu in my younger days. It teaches unarmed as well as weapons. Very good style to learn.
It means "One-heart method." It was founded by Tatsuo Shimabuku in 1954.

My instructor at the time was an 8th degree black belt or 8th dan. Not sure about other styles but the way this one worked is that once you became a black belt you had to spend that many years as that belt level. So when you became a 5th degree you had to spend 5 years in that rank. So by this time my teacher ( George Iberle) should be a grand master (10th dan).

Oh, and don't forget about Run Fu...that seems to work great in sticky situations!
