Wart,

For self defense I was looking at Krav Maga " the official self defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces"
Krav Maga

Also, I'm not that flexible...I guess with stretches and exercise I could becom emore flexible (??)...do you have to be super flexbile gymnist guy to do Judo?
Heck n-o-o-o!!! The key is in learning how to fall correctly (think of wrestling!) AND technique, . . . . then with practice, it's easy!!

P.S. Remember what I stated above when you go to stop that drunk S.F., and stay just out of his reach!! (Special Ops teaches MUCH, MUCH more than the basic self defense you'll learn!

I did Wing Chun Kung Fu for a while. Having previously tried Karate, Judo and Tae Kwon Do, if found it far more enjoyable.

My sifu ran his classes without ceremony (e.g. no bowing, formal competition or belts) and without enforcing aggression in his students.
Laziness and running away were his core themes - never expend energy you don't need to, and never fight if you can avoid it. We also learned a lot about the physics of fighting - centre of gravity, leverage and so on.

I was taught in part by Sifu Nino Bernardo, who learned from Yip Man, the same master who taught Bruce Lee. Needless to say, he was one of the coolest guys I have ever met, and I regretted giving up his classes when I moved away.

I, too, did krav maga a while ago.
Excellent system, it was meant for real life situations and didn't include much of the mental stuff eastern styles do.
That was fine for me, as I do not feel it necessary to meditate

Wing Chun

I study Wing Chun. My sifu (shaun Rawcliffe

http://www.wingchun.co.uk/ ) has studied with Ip Chun son of Yip man. (And the chain goes on to the creator of the form...)

I must say that Wing Chun is a very good Martial Art. All Martial Arts are good for self-defence. But one of the most modern and best for street Fighting is Wing Chun.

I never really thought it was that good. I thought one inch punches and the like were BS stories to big Bruce Lee up......that was until Sifu did a LIGHT one inch punch which hurt like hell (course i pretended it didnt hurt....but i was winded LOL)

Wing Chun emphasises creating the most power with the least amount of effort. If u look at the masters of this form, they are skinny old men...but they could beat the crap out of anyone!

Gracie Jujitsu is good.....but would u like to be rolling around on concrete in the street?? Judo is not really a street fighters sport.....I have tried it.

I love Wing Chun and i learn new things each lesson. You get to use Butter Fly knives and the pole... Thats it. But the most emphasis is place on the hands and keeping your balance proper in order to maximise your speed and punches.

Its a Kung Fu form made for the street....It is also good for confined spaces and can be lethal...therefore one must always stay away from a fight, as u may cause your opponent serious damage to internal organs. This is because Wing Chun focuses on the centre line theory. So u might punch without thinking and rupture your opponents arteries. Wing Chun is SERIOUS... The Heart kidneys, eyes throat brain are all targets. THis is the main centre line which is attacked. At the same time you protect yourself.

We are taght the best defence is to run away or to talk yourself out of the fight. But if you or your family are in danger, then u can kick some serious ass

Oh yeah, no meditation, bowing, silly rules, and u keep your trainers ON. We also do not do any exercises there, we just go straight into learning the style for 2 hours twice a week. So your instructor is not wasting your time doing Press ups and on the spot jogging for half the lesson

Remember while taking these classes that actual fighting is the best practice. I took kenpo karate once where all we did was practice the techniques and do a little sparring. I'm sure someone could have kicked my@$$ quite easily.
Then, in my senior year in high school, I took classes somewhere else where, when we spared, we hit each other pretty damn hard and bleeding noses and bruised ribs was common. I was also bodybuilding at the time. Had my bench at 265lbs.
Now I'm just a crippled weakling. But someday.....
