You have to understand that OBL and the Saudi family are not friends. He hates them because they are 'friendly to the USA'. However since his main target is the USA he agreed to take money from them for not attacking them and used it for his organisation.

I'm also not quite sure as to why this is 'big'.

I would rather spend 10x the amt of money of defense than give money to an evil cause. My conscience would get the best of me knowing that my money had gone to the killing of thousands of innocents. Who cares about saving money. It is a moral and ethical issue.

Financing terrorism is exactly what comes to mind when I think of the statement "You're either with us, or against us". Anyone who knowingly gave any kind of assistance to Bin Laden is not a friend of peace even if they did it to save there own hide from attack. This is about principals and sending a message that terrorist have no friends.
