Opps I did it again

No not the brittany spears song.

After being so excited about taking a class on W2K (see here I goofed up my PC again.

When I set up my PC a couple of months ago I set up a 2 gb partition and loaded DOS, I set up a 8 gb partition of W2k. I also have a 4.3 gb drive that I have win 98 loaded on. The 2 gb and the 8 gb partitions are on a 20gb drive. Well I decided to use this partitoin so I formatted it NTFS, when doing this it said that I would have to edit the boot.ini file. I did as instructed and all seemed fine. I rebooted right into W2k no problems. Well last night I decided to try win98, again no problems getting inot win98. I then decided to go back into W2k, this is where everything went bad. Upon boot I got the message NTLDR missing. Uhhhh oooooooo.
I grabbed a boot disk and booted to the C: drive ( DOS) the only thing there was a scandisk.log file no files or directories.

To make a long story short I grabbed my W2k Boot disks and repartitioned the 20gb drive into a 5 gb partition for the system and a 15 gb partition (NTFS) for file storage.

No tonight I get to reload all drivers and programs for W2K, reformat the Win98 drive ( just because) and reload all drivers for it. Then I can load HL and all the maps, models, etc...

It was getting about time to redo the system again any how. This time I will make an image of the drive so restoring will be a breeze.

Live and learn

Heehee, oh man this is too funny....when I first came to TechIMO, I didn't know a driver from a boot disk...didn't know what WIN95 was, even though I was running it...

No idea what a CPU did.

So it was with some amazement just now that I read Korgul's post...

...and understood everything he said!!

Incredible. Maybe there's hope after all!

Korg - If'n ya want access to that there storage from 98, you might want to format it FAT32 instead. That's probably why you got the NTLDR missing. 98 can't see NTFS, so it was trying to find stuff on the NT part with the 98 part. I think. I've done that before and boffed my entire system. You pretty much gotta put 98 on first, then 2K or XP. You can put 2K and XP on in any order though. :P (Then put Linux on last!)

Or, ya' can take a floppy and put a copy of:

boot.ini
ntdetect.com
NTLDR

on it, and then write protect the floppy!

That way, if it can't find the NTLDR, ya' just stick in the floppy and reboot. It'll start off the floppy and then continue to load W2K. Once you're back up and running, copy them back to the C:\

Thanks Whir and sharder. I have the system back up and running again with the dual boot config.

Whir the thing is that is how I had it set up.

C:\ = DOS
D:\ = Win98
e:\= W2K
F & G = CD rom

When I put the other partition on it said to edit the boot.ini so that the ARC path was multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3) instead of multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2). I edited like it said and actually got into the OS's but once getting into 98 all was lost.

I will remember that sharder, as a matter of fact I think I will do that now.
