LAID OFF ALREADY...

actually ,i used to get real excited about getting laid off from const jobs when i was younger cause that meant two paykchecks and usually from 5pm to closing in the saloon.

but times have changed and thank God so have i. i no longer beg to be the first one laid off after i get my time for unemployment bennys built up. i actually stay on the job till they kick me off

so i am now (tecknikally, anyway) unemployed as of noon today.

but then the job was only supposed to last 4 days anyway. got two hours of OT the first day.

and also learned a few new things about installing door hardware,so it was well worth the effort.

will be nice not haveing to get up at 4:45(3:45 whir time)AM anymore.

now to finish up the 4 contracting jobs i have in the works around here.

life is good........

enough of my ramblings-bubye now

Having usually worked white collar jobs, my views on layoffs are quite different. They were never welcome events.

My experience has been that companies don't like to lay off white collar workers. They would rather that they quit so as to reduce the company's unemployment insurance payments. Being non-union employees, engineers, designers, and programers are often treated this way with relative impunity by the management.

In the past, this has meant things like: transfering office workers to semi-skilled shop and field jobs (like building storage shelves or inventory of heavy goods), harassment by management over miniscule issues, reassignment to projects with impossible conditions or schedules, reassignment to unsuitable office quarters (like a dusty old warehouse), downgrading of individual computers, furniture, and office equipment, and assignment to jobs outside of one's technical area. (One employer found out that I was not only a capable designer, but also CAM programer, shop supervisor, and expiditor. They eventually exhausted their options and just laid me off.)

There was a time when I could afford being laid off for two or three months but not anymore.

Best of luck getting a new job.

Doh! Here I am praying for a layoff. But I'm young and I hate my job.

Glad you don't have to get up at 3:45 anymore. That's just not nice. :P

It's too bad they won't find out how skilled I am at other jobs here. They just keep me in this one, doing nothing. They spend more money paying me to sit here than they would if they laid me off. Makes perfect sense.

Ah well, have some fun drab. Maybe you can do some tweaking while the wife isn't home.

Because here you get paid to now work if you're laid off!
(for a little while anyway)
