Workplace policies, yet again, getting sadder and sadder

Maybe you should route the workplace camera feed to a website, something labeled "sweat-shop" something or another...

Surely, even in the US, there are rules about video monitoring. I know we have them in Australia.

The boss should have the security video professionally monitored, and unless he has security personnel there should be NO live feed. It should just get canned, so in the event of a hold-up, evidence can be produced.

From a security standpoint, having a live feed can be very dangerous. Picture this: He is sitting in his office and notices a hold-up playing on the monitor on the wall. So he grabs his gun and charges down the stairs like Rambo - and gets shot dead. Or worse, shoots someone else.

If there are no video monitoring in the workplace laws in your area then I wish you luck. He will be able to do whatever he wants, I suppose.

Cheers
Mick

I was going to suggest the reroute to sweatshop, but it was already suggested.

Have you talked to the boss about it? Why don't the watchers take active part in the repair end? Are they incapable? Could they do it if say, all the techs went elsewhere and got better jobs?

I know many business owners that setup video cameras to monitor employees and work areas. And I don't really see that much of an issue with it here, other than the fact that the guy (for whatever reasons) vehemently doesn't believe that you are being productive, or may be untrustworthy.

I say let him do it, and let him be irked that he wasted his own cash on the setup for no reason, other than to prove himself wrong. Which I'm sure he won't like.

If you, yourself are so against it - I'd suggest at least talking to him about it before you make any rash decisions.

A very good post, and the questions are very good too, and you know what my advice is? Print out those questions and place them on your boss' desk. They are all valid and sane questions, non of them are rude or insulting, it might 'wake him up', and make him see things from YOUR perspective.

If you have another job lined up, you could just pull the whole, "I just don't think I'll go anymore." routine.

I think your comparison to a male/female relationship is pretty apt. You have to ask yourself whether you want to try to work it out, or give it up.

Seems like you already know it's not a healthy work environment, so now it's time for you to attempt do do something about it. Definitely doesn't sound like it's going to improve if your boss isn't clued in sometime soon.

Where I used to work was a LOT like that - maybe even worse. I quit. Plain and simple. It took a long time for me to be able to quit though...

It was horrible, and I hope I never have to deal with it again. Good luck.
