Kids Kill the wiener? (dog)

Some of you know my friend has one of those weiner/sausage dogs...never can remember their name. They recieved the 3 year old dog as a gift earlier this year...it's been known to have tempers.

One day last week my friend tried to pick up the thing, it turns it's head and grabs onto his thumb!!! So the story goes, he had to pull his thumb out of there amid a bunch of blood. I saw the marks...severl were quite deep and he could hardly move it. Any worse than that and he would have required stitches but to this day - a week later - he can move his thumb fine.

Anyway, I'm trying to convince my friend (and his pregnant g/f....) that they CANNOT rehabilitate the dog...extermination is the only way, IMO. Now if it was my dog that I just got and it had bitten me several times WITHOUT provocation...it would be dead, simple as that. At 3 years old, that's old enough to know better, if not there is something wrong in the head IMO....and this latest bite was quite bad, lots of blood and many marks all over his thumb.

They have a baby coming along in December (that's another story........)....I'm positive that this lil runt dog is capable of killing an infant...my friend seems to be lax on this issue even though he claims to agree. His g/f doesn't want to 'put it to sleep' (whether by vaccination or .22 in the head) but to sell it or give it away. What do you guys think? Is a dog capable of being 'reformed' if it does serious damage like this one did? Can you even trust it?

PS - what is the correct way to spell weiner? Is it wiener or weiner?

Yes and no. They could try obediance classes, but I have my doubts since the dog is already three years old and bites with no repurcussions from the owners.

My advice? Give it to someone without kids.

Our family have a dachshound and he's the friendliest dooog in the world, except when you grab him under the back to lift him up. That's however because he has backproblems (common among these dogs, especially when they run up and down stairs their backs can get hurt). It could be the reason to its agressiveness. Maybe they should see a vet and have the dooog checked out first.

Edit: Oh and...yeah...their jaws are strong...

Well, Wart, I was not agreeing with you at all, until I got to the part about the infant.

No way. The dog has to get a new home. End of story.

Oh, and it's wiener.

Had a friend with a "similar" problem---got a mate for his female Lab, new dog had a seemingly normal temperment and was no problem---came home from work one day and found new dog with female dog in a neck/throat deathgrip and she was very much near death---he took both dogs to the vet---new dog was euthanized out of fear of a recurrance or worse (cant consciously give a dog away thats does that, right?) female took 25 stitches to the throat and was fed an almost liquid diet for 3 weeks while recovering...

What I don't get is that a pet is owned...I'm not going to be bossed around by my pet. When my pet bites me without provocation? That's just wrong.

It's easier for me to fathom getting rid of it because frankly I don't have feelings for the thing at all. I'm not a fan of small yippy dogs...heck, I go to pet the thing and it nearly pisses on my foot it's so excited. Actually, here's the thign: I will never get a dog that's not a puppy because it's already ruined by somebody else....exactly the case with this dog. Unfortunate really but that's the way thigns go :-/

TKOP - exactly...

I have a smaller .. well, medium sized dog, and he hates being picked up. And if you try to, he'll playfully wrap his hand around your hand (no pressure at all, just showing he doesn't like it).

THAT I don't have a problem with. I want to agree with what RobRich is saying, but can't. If these guys are going to have a kid, they *have* to get rid of the dog.

If these people aren't repremenanding the dog and showing him that there will be ramifications everytime he decides to sink his teeth into flesh, there won't be any progress - and the dog will view this as A-OK.

I'm the same way.. Unfortunately, but that's the way things have to be sometimes.

My friend just got a dog that is a wild little punk and bites and scratches everything. One thing I notice, is that the only person that has probably ever disciplined this dog (ever) is me... lol... And he doesn't bite me anymore, so.....

They do give him a smack on the snoat (sp) but he never learns...same after he pees/poops everywhere...just like a newborn puppy would. It's really not enough though because they let him get away with a lot more....Some people just shouldn't own dogs anyway...or they should get those low maintenance, 'static' dogs that sit there and wag their tails all the time

It's better to get rid of it if they're having a baby too. Cuz of allergy risks and stuff.
