Bodg Mass Index (BMI)
Saw this in US News & World Report mag...
weight (lb) / height (in.) ^2[squared] * 703 = BMI
Healthy - 18.5-24.9
Overweight - 25-29.9
Obese - 30-39.9
Morbidly obese - 40+
Mine is 21.2
Warthog

One thing it doesn't take into account... some guys have a tall skinny build (ie. Reggie Miller BMI - 20) while others have a more broad, solid build (ie. Shaq BMI - 29). Thus a "formula" like that one is too generic. According to that "formula" I'd have to get my weight down to 150 (I'm 5'6") but if I were to actually do that, I'd be permanantly sick and nothing but skin and bones. (Yes, I'm a bit overweight, but for me, "healthy" would be somewhere around 165 - 170.) I'd advise US News & World Report to try again...

1st try - 5980.38 (something went TERRIBLY wrong, or I generate my own gravity well!)
2nd try - 28.47 (Yup, that's about right. Damn order of operations!)
Actually, my doctor told me to get around 190-195, but my BMI doesn't come clean till around 180. Go figure

18.9 :/ I'm actually suprised I'm in the 'healthy' range I figured I'd be below it
Yes you square your height in inches first then divide your weight by that

[W/(H**2)]*703
mine: 24.2 Not bad at my age.

As one who uses BMI relative to the calculation of Anaesthetic Agents, it's probably widely accepted that whilst accurate for Mass calculus, Health Status is a little more shaky.
A BMI above certain levels can be demed unsuitable for a certain type of anaethesia, although the patient is fit and healthy. (apart from requiring an anaesthetic).
In other words, don't get too excited by it, Cardiac Output and cardiovascular stability are much better references to Health.

My BMI = 25.8
my body fat percentage = 10%
Body fat percentage is taken using calipers http://www.healthchecksystems.com/bodyfat.htm
but even like CBB said Quote: |
