Anyone using "Vonage" for unlimited digital phonecalls?

Here is their quote:
Vonage DigitalVoice is an all-inclusive home phone service that replaces your current phone company.

This is like the home phone service you have today- but better!

It combines local and long distance for one flat price and runs over your high speed internet connection. Say goodbye to confusing bills, and surprising charges. With Vonage Digital Voice, you get unlimited local and long distance calling, great features like Caller ID, Call Waiting, and Voicemail and you only pay one flat price.

www.vonage.com

40$ flat fee per month w/a Cisco ata 186 adapter---you talk over your regular phone with the same connection quality...
Might be pretty cool!
Eliminating your phone co. completely could be a good thing for some...

Sounds very interesting if you make lot of long distance calls and have a cable TV-internet like Road Runner.

Wonder about the quality of transmission.

If its comparable I'd definitely like to give it a shot. They don't seem to have a free one month trial. Will call them and ask.

shahani,

Hi. I have been using Vonage for a few months now with no real problems. I am very happy with the service and have been recommending it to friends and family.

I suggest looking at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/voip/ as they have a wealth of customer feedback - both positive and negative - to help in making your decision.

If you decide to signup - make sure an existing customer, like thekingofpain or me refers you and saves you $40 off your second bill! A little $$ saved is always a good thing.

I would agree with TKOP as well that keeping your cellphone is definitely a good idea. I have found that Vonage works great for me as a second line; I use it for unlimited long distance and to have an area code that is local to my friends and family in Florida. I have a few friends who have had problems with it as a primary line - especially people on DSL, as TKOP said above!

Make sure to try the Vonage speed test at a few different times of day to see if your line can support the 90Kbs up and down needed for a good connection.

Best of luck
AnonJuan

My current phone bill is $15 thru Verizon. I make long distance using cell phone only - nites/weekends are free. So I don't see that much advantage.

Then you are the lucky one! You're quite right - you really need to have a long distance bill of more than $40 /month for it to be worth it - or if you travel alot.

Vonage Forum

I have been a vonage customer for about six month’s now I really enjoy it. Not just for the Geek gadget factor but the saving’s factor has been huge for me. I operate a home based business. My phone bill before vonage was normally around $200-$300 a month now it’s just $40 I love it.

There is a useful community devoted to the vonage users for an objective opinion on the vonage product’s Vonage forum
