On the 17 hour flights from Bombay to New York, I do the following:

1) Remove shoes
2) Avoid alcohol, but take lots of juices/fluids
3) Eat well
4) Sleep
5) Sleep
6) Sleep

I found the last three to be most effective.

Well there is that trick from Die Hard 2....

take off your shoes and make fists with your toes LOL

Dunno.. never flown anything more than north/south so never left the same time zone.

Sleep is the best tip. Not only while flying, dont be exhausted before you get on the plane either...

What we did on our trip to Oz was nap as much as possible.
We left D-fw at 5:00 pm local time(Sat), into LAX @ 7:00 pm, then off over the pacific @11:00 pm LA time. It was a LOOOOOONG flight to Fiji, arrived there At 6:15 am Monday because of crossing the date line. Then another 5 hrs to Sydney and 1 1/2 hrs to Melbourne, getting there at about 3:00 pm local time. Met up with a friend and got to hotel, dumped bags and went looking around and ate dinner about 9:00 pm, back to hotel and BAM lights out at 10, woke up next mornig at 8, felt fine.
We never had any real symptoms of it the whole time we were there. We were there 8 days total and flew back to Fiji for 3 days, then back home after that.
Even after coming back, the only weird thing was about two days after returning home, we slept for like 14 hours one saturday, but other than that, no effects.
Get as much sleep/nap time on the plane as you can, and I personally think that if you DON'T try to figure out what time it is "back home" it helps. If you arrive at your destination early in the morning, do not take a nap, but get out in the sunlight as much as you can, and try to go to bed at the local time that you would at home. If you sack out at 10:00pm at home, wait till 10:00 pm local time to do the same thing.
What was strange was on the return trip, we left Fiji at 11:00 pm, and about an hour into the flight, the flight attendants made everyone shut all the window shades. I thought this was strange, but after waking up about 3 hours later, and opening the shade to BROAD DAYLIGHT!! I understood..
Sorry for the long story, but I was really worried that I would be slammed by jet lag, but it turned out to be a non issue for us.
Mind over matter, ya know?
