A Horse problem

Hi! I am Argon88's sister. I was given a foal for my birthday, and it's due anytime....If it's a colt, when should I geld/castrate him? I really need help here!! If you have an answer, please help. Thank you!!

Depending on the breed, I would have second thoughts about castration. We had Paso Finos and kept them studs, with proper care ( lots of love) and a firm hand ( from birth ) they were gentlemen and well mannered and you have the option of breeding them too. If he looks like he's going to be hard to handle, then I'd consider the knife, but only then. Give the boy a chance !!!!!!

Well when we have done so on our ranch it is usually done between the age of 6 month to a year old. What breed? What kind of bloodlines (papers ect) Truthfully if the expected colt was not breed to be a bred stud or mare I wholeheartedly agree with cutting.

Did a really quick search and it looks like many Vets recommend around the 6 mnth mark. for example http://www.shelvet.com/id24.htm Midway down the page
