Systems Warning for Passengers of 94 and 95 Altimas

Just heard this story on CNN
http://www.citizen.org/pressroom/release.cfm?ID=1179
<<Aug. 7, 2002

Defective Nissan Altima Passenger-Side Air Bags Blind People; 1994, Early 1995 Cars Should Be Recalled

Approximately 197,500 Vehicles Still on the Road; NHTSA Investigating

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Public Citizen and the Center for Auto Safety today called on the federal government to recall 1994 and early 1995 Nissan Altimas because their passenger-side air bags are defective and can cause blindness and permanent eye injuries. They also urged people who ride in those Nissan Altimas not to sit in the front passenger seats of the vehicles.>>

I hate air bags. Our government at work again with a forced save myself from me plan.

The dam things may have saved lives but my mother had to get an act of congress to have hers disabled because at her hight it is more dangerous to have the air bag.

My friend had a little fender bender and nearly had an eye removed by the bag deploying into his glasses and forcing them into his eye.

I am sorry you would do better with a five part seat belt. Cheaper to implement as well. Racing harnesses do a great job of keeping your body the way it was designed. And it only applies the exact amount of force to compensate for a crash.

Make em if you will but I want the option to have it turned off.

Rant off...

Air bag modules ands supplemental restraint systems....ooo my specialty. Bags produced by companies such as Autoliv, Takata, and TRW deploy at 250mph filled with 700-degree sodium azide gas(a rat poison, btw). Better hold the steering wheel at the 10 and 2 o'clock position. Any lower and the bag can slam your forearm into your head or neck. Watch out for metal-rimmed sunglasses like aviators. Those can be driven into your brain at the bridge of your nose.
Passenger side bags were de-powered(class 2.2 compressed gas, mainly argon) in '94 due to small children being killed by full force steering wheel-type bags. Automakers now are coming out with "smart" two-stage airbags that can sense a seated person's weight and distance from the steering column and deploy the appropriate force bag based on g forces/road speed. Also pretensioners in the belt reel or female buckle end will fire to momentarily tug the lap belt below the pelvic bones to align the torso prior to full bag impact, preventing submarining under to the floorboard and/or hopefully no internal organ damage(Not recommended for child safety seats. Put 'em in back).

i agree, i personally would LOVE a 5-point harness (once again..l.broke college student), but that's just me and my love of cars. they're definitely not for everyone.

it's a shame about the altimas. nissan really makes good cares IMO, personally i like 'em even better than toyotas and hondas. besides, they made the Z! (speaking of which, i can't WAIT for the new one to come out).

Have you ever used one? I find them to be about 5x more comfortable than your standard seatbelt. A little less convenient in some regards, sure...
