The physical craving will go away, remarkably soon -- three or four days, a week max. The desire to smoke, and the ingrained habits that make you reach for a cig whenever you feel a bit stressed (or a bit relaxed, too) -- those take much longer. Years, I'd say. (I still dream about lighting up, and it's been eighteen years since I had my last one.) But once the craving passes, you can actually master the habits, with constant (at least at first) vigilance. Just remember: you're not going to have "just one". Not ever.

But if you do fall off the wagon, don't tell yourself, "Well, that's it, I just can't do it." Just try again. Eventually it will work.

I tried to quit once using that nicotine containing gum. Chewed so much of it that I ulcerated my gums. Still puffin' but I know it's killin' me.

Theo, I agree with you.. I never in a million years thought I'd be calling myself a non-smoker, nor did I ever think I'd want to, or be able to stop. I still find it hard to believe.

It really is all a matter of mind. If one has the desire one can do it.
