Exploding JELLO! (and other boredom-induced things)

Yeah, so I got bored and started doing searches on Dictionary.com and some other sites. Yeah, so I stumbled across some very interesting facts.
Well, everybody knows that Jello is made up mostly of gelatin (and sugar, of course). Well, there's this stuff called blasting gelatin that is used as a high explosive.
Not the same chemical makeup as the gelatin in Jello, but whatever, it's still called gelatin. This stuff is a mixture of Nitroglycerine (C3H5N3O9) and nitrocellulose ("guncotton"). So, in theory, you could chemically alter your household gelatin to get it. But yeah, that'd be difficult. I just get it from my uncle (who works for NIST and gets to test fun stuff like this).

Very fun to play with in small amounts (though not reccommended if you live in the city). In large amounts, you have to stand back so far that you don't get to see the actual explosion, so it's not quite as pretty that way, but still fun.
(NOTE: You shouldn't use this type of thing without proper training and equipment.)

It's interesting what you learn when you get bored and go surfing on Dictionary.com and this nifty site called xrefer (a good information source).

Yeah, so post some weird and interesting things you've learned on the internet or wherever.

Later.

back when I used to work at a restaurant (I was like 16 ) my manager took some creamer (the powdered kind) and poured through a flame from a common lighter and it flamed up

Factories that make stuff like creamer and custard powder, have to have very stingent fire precautions, the risk of explosion is very high.
At school we made some simple explosions using flour, take a tin can with a push on lid, put a small hole in the bottom and attach a tube to the hole, put a little candle in the tin, and cover the end of the tube with flour. Light the candle, put the lid on and quickly blow through the tube.
The blow will send the flour into a cloud which will "explode" in the candle flame and blow the lid of.

WHen I was 16, We told a guy at work that the body makes it's own methane gas, and would in fact burn. He thought it was just a funny movie gag. Anyway, he went to the bathroom, and a few seconds later yelled, and everyone in the place was bustin' then he came out of the barthroom his pants around his knees walking bowlegged
I still get a laugh out of that when I think about it.

A fav pastime of mine is crushing up hundreds of sparkles. Placeing the crushed sparkler into a ping pong ball tapping it. Leaving a little whole and then lighting it.

about 7 feet of flame for about 40 sec

Also, wrap a ping pong ball in alfoil and then heat it....
