Ever eat vegemite?

You know, the stuff mentioned in the 'Men at Work' song "Land Down Under"

"...he just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich."
Vegemite!

I had the opportunity to try some of that stuff recently and it was YUMMY! Very salty, but I really liked it. From what I was told by the Australian guy who gave it to me, it's almost like PB & J to American kids...most Aussies grow up eatin' the stuff.
I'm sure our Aussie friends here can tell you more.

Mike

Yep not too bad and its good for you too. We also have a similar spread called Marmite - this stuff is pure evil and tastes really bad. You can also get Vegemite drink, this is so so good either.

But WHAT is it? Nowhere on that site does it specify what the stuff is.

I got a jar of it in my cabinet now!
I made the mistake of the first time I tried it by taking a teaspoon and getting about half of it loaded with vegemite and had it in the mouth before I realized how potent it was!
I wanted to lick the carpet to get some of the taste out of my mouth!
My co-worker is an Ozzie and he just laughed at me, THEN said you were to put a THIN layer of it on bread to eat it.

Out, it is a yeast extract basically. pretty pungent if you get a good whiff of it in the jar.

Exactly what I was trying to find as well, but it's ingredients aren't listed. I was looking for them in an attempt to get an idea of what this stuff tastes like. Instead, here's a little nugget I found:

Quote:
In 1928 it was decided that perhaps a name change would revive Vegemite's sluggish sales. In an attempt to emulate the success of the English spread Marmite, Vegemite was renamed "Parwill". Maybe Parwill, but the Australian consumers didn't, and Parwill made a quick exit
Fascinating!

MARMITE INGREDIENTS:

Yeast Extract, Salt, Vegetable Extract, Niacin, Thiamin, Spice Extracts, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12

http://www.worldhealthcare.net/marmite/ingred.html

The Product

MARMITE is a concentrated yeast extract paste, enjoyed at any time of the day, whether on toast for breakfast, in sandwiches at lunchtime, or as an added ingredient in stews and casseroles.

MARMITE spread is 100% vegetarian, but unlike some vegetarian meals, MARMITE provides an excellent source of vitamin B12. This vitamin helps to prevent anaemia. It also contains a good source of Riboflavin and Niacin as well as an excellent source of Folic Acid. MARMITE is good news for the nation's slimmers.

It contains virtually no fat or sugar. A single 4g serving amounts to only 9kcal/35kJ typical values. Although MARMITE has a salty taste, there is more salt in the bread and butter on which the MARMITE is spread than in the MARMITE itself. MARMITE has a distinctive savoury taste, unlike anything else.

It remains a popular food for all the family loved equally by the toddler of the family through to the Grandpa. Over the years, other companies have taken the basic raw materials used in producing MARMITE and infused its special taste into other products, resulting in such delights as muffins flavoured with MARMITE yeast extract and cheese flavoured with MARMITE yeast extract.

I tried vegemite when I was in Australia. I didn't like it very much. It tastes like brown gravy, except really really salty. Australian's kitkats are better down there though, the chocolate tastes better lol.

It's salty, but I still enjoyed it...definitely use a thin layer though!
Speaking of Chocolate...that's my ultimate favorite of all favorites!
I would bet my life savings that I can out-eat anyone here when it comes to chocolate. My mom used to tell me that I would get fat, get pimples, blah blah blah because I ate so much chocolate.
Never happened though, so I continue my chocolate eating saga to this day...
