I'm a hobbyist, not a photographer (neither butting nor budding). But there's nothing like a good ole SLR for learning the tricks of the trade. I had the good fortune to learn on an old fully manual Minolta, so I had to learn how to set f-stop, exposure, etc. Kind of like learning how to use a slide rule before you get a calculator (I did that, too!).

You might even think about shopping for a used camera. Save the money for extra lenses. My sister picked up a fantastic old Nikon SLR with flash and two lenses at a garage sale for $25.

And as a professional once told me, the difference between a good photographer and a great one is the great ones spend a lot more money on film. Take LOTS of pictures and you'll end up a more really good shots.

I do weddings and use to do all the photos for an apartment guide magazine. Not sure how I can help, but feel free to email me.

I've shot a few miles of film, often professionally, and still maintain a B/W darkroom. I really hope film will continue to be produced, in spite of the Digital boom in photography.

I like to light my subject myself---I have never gone for flash, or even "available light". This is why the digitals cameras aren't interesting to me--seems they just have to have that darned Flash. Plus, you can have a LOT of fun messing with the f-stops on a 35mm to achieve nice effects, like limited depth-of-field.

I spent many happy years photographing women, lighting them carefully, developing the film and creating my own prints...the actual photography is only HALF the story, the REST of the magic is created in the darkroom. I like to say those gals taught me everything I know about light and shadow, and contrast.

I think you have to work harder with film and a darkroom, than you would with a digital image and PhotoShop....but I'll tell you, if you can do something meaningful with the former, you've really accomplished something!

What I like most about digital is that I can takes LOTS and LOTS of pictures. I took about 400 at a cousin's wedding recently and sent him the whole lot. He loved it!

my dad recently gave me his classic old Minolta SRT-101 SLR camera with a bag full of lenses.
The fact that I have to *think* about exposure and focus and shutter speed really helps me learn IMO. The main downside is those "snap-shots" you can make with a fully auto camera just don't happen with a manual focus unless you have a lot of skill

I took it to a recent airshow, because I was tired of aerial pics which were just dots in the sky. I got some nice results:

Hey, U-96? You got some AWESOME shots there, may I assume they are prints from negatives?

Because if they are, you can take the darker ones* to a custom lab and print them for better brightness. You'll be very pleasntly surprised (I think you have a couple of "Framers" there!)

*Particularly the one of the jets with the colored smoke trail---WOOOH!
