I've shot a few miles of film, often professionally, and still maintain a B/W darkroom. I really hope film will continue to be produced, in spite of the Digital boom in photography.
I like to light my subject myself---I have never gone for flash, or even "available light". This is why the digitals cameras aren't interesting to me--seems they just have to have that darned Flash. Plus, you can have a LOT of fun messing with the f-stops on a 35mm to achieve nice effects, like limited depth-of-field.
I spent many happy years photographing women, lighting them carefully, developing the film and creating my own prints...the actual photography is only HALF the story, the REST of the magic is created in the darkroom. I like to say those gals taught me everything I know about light and shadow, and contrast.
I think you have to work harder with film and a darkroom, than you would with a digital image and PhotoShop....but I'll tell you, if you can do something meaningful with the former, you've really accomplished something!
