Media IE users, don't be shown up by those cool Mozilla users (your own TechIMO sidebar!)

****** Sorry, this is no longer available. Discontinued due to lack of interest. ********

Check it out. You can be almost as cool as those Mozilla users. Here's your own TechIMO sidebar for Internet Explorer.

However, unlike Mozilla, we have to trick IE into allowing us to do this. I've simply done that by a minor registry edit. What it does is tell IE to use the sidebar for one specific search engine (Yahoo). Then it simply substitutes the URL of the TechIMO sidebar in place of the normal search engine's url. It can easily be undone by just clicking on "customize" (at the top of your sidebar) and then simply choose another search engine. When you do this it'll erase the registry edit I made and it'll reset Yahoo back to it's correct URL. I promise it's absolutely harmless. . . . and very cool.

To get your TechIMO sidebar you just need to download
this REG file:
Win9x - TechIMOsidebar.reg <---do a right-click & "save target as..."
Win2k/XP - TechIMOsidebar.reg
Then double-click on that REG file. Quit and restart IE.

As long as you don't go into "customize" and make any changes, then your TechIMO sidebar will remain as long as you want. If you ever lose it and want it back, just double-click on that REG file again.

Scott: Please note that what I said in the Mozilla TechIMO sidebar thread
still holds true. You're the boss around here...I don't need to tell you that.

Do you know if thats specific to Win2k/XP or will it work in 9x?

Actually I'm hoping the w2k/xp users will let me know if works for them. I'm on 98 and I know it works for us.

And then...why would you have to go back to the other thread?

Minor difference, 2k/Xp uses a different header for regedit

instead of REGEDIT4 it requires

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Other than that worked great

Thanks

I think thats one place where opera is limited
It doesn't have sidebar capability.

I'll admit it's a pretty cool sidebar
I'd have to modify for my own purposes of course
(how dare you leave out the development forums lol )

Cool. So you're saying I probably didn't need to edit and make seperate reg files, right? Oh well, it's should work the same either way.

Well, there's only so much room.

You guys are welcome to edit you're own personal sidebars OR just tell me the specific changes you want made and I can probably do it for ya.

BTW, Web Design Forums is the link you want. Should we change that to Web Developer's Forums instead?
