Lightning strikes...
<sigh> Well I came home from work today to four toasted NICs, a burned up 10base2/T hub, my disabled brother's dead cordless phone, and his now oddly coloured 21" TV. That's the current tally. Damn.... Lightning struck a tree maybe thirty feet from the side of our house this afternoon. I guess there was a power surge which killed the phone and hub (which was on the same surge protector as my TV, VCR, and laptop and all are fine), and damaged the TV. The surge that nuked the hub must've sent a spike down my 10base2 line, killing all but two NICs (one of those two PCs was on, the other was off. Go figure.). Of the four damaged NICs two of the computers were on at the time although the computers all seem fine so far.
This was supposed to be my first week of vacation too (I got stuck going in this week). "Sucks" just doesn't do it justice...

Sorry to hear it... I had a strike so close to the house the other day it made my monitor warp like it was being degaussed. It didn't blink the power... I think it was just the magnetic pulse that did it. Shame on me for being on right? Gotta look at weather radar somehow though.

Look at the positive Eli, at least it didn't burn the house down. Sorry about your bad luck.

Yeah at least we're still here, but it's still a pain in the butt I don't need. The insurance guy said the network cards, the phone, and the hub are all write-offs, and he took the TV with him although their tech usually says that sort of damage couldn't be caused by lightning. There's a $200 deductible so if they don't cover the TV it's not worth it to file a claim. Just great... Well at least I have a couple of spare NICs lying around anyway so I can get a couple of systems back online. What an expensive month this has been...

Lightning ran in on my buddy's daughter's house and it did the same thing to their TV. I'm going to ask him about it tomorrow when I see him at work. I'll find out what the insurance company did in their case and post back tomorrow.
