ok... my mom and I have come to a disagreement again about how to go about doing this.

I have sanded some of the walls, but there are some sections that I just don't know what to do with. In areas, the top layer of the drywall has come off (the layer that is sort of like paper) exposing what looks pretty much like cardboard. how should I fix this??

my plan was to:
1. sand the walls as close to even as I could
2. paint the entire area with a primer/sealer (specifically: KILZ OriginaL, unless someone has a better suggestion)
3. paint with the nice paint

do i need to do anything special to the areas that have the top layer of drywall peeled away??

thoughts?
-Z

If the wall is drywall (sheetrock) it is composed of a piece of plaster covered on each side with paper, if this is damageg repair with drywall "mud" from any supply store, trowel it on sand it down. from what you describe, doubt you will ever have a nice job just painting over it.

I agree alondra, unless there are places where the paper has been torn from the wall. I think those should be smothed over with either tape or mud.

Like I said earlier, get some Topping Compound, trowel it on, sand it down. Primer. Paint. Anything else is gonna buy ya a bunch of grief.

Where the paper is damaged, that's where the glass mesh drywall patch is used. This will reinforce those areas & prevent the gypsum from flaking off. Otherwise it's just like painting over dirt. The paint sticks to the dirt, but the dirt doesn't stick to itself.

Go back and read Martoch's post. That's really the best way to do it. You can use drywall mud over the mesh tape, and forget the glue, but you have to be more careful when you work, as excessive "working" of the mud will just loosten things up.

You gotta slap it on there quick and dry, let it dry fully, and then sand. Repeat until it's smooth.

If the dammaged area is very small, like the size of a quarter, you can probably just "mud" it. As long as there's enough intact paper to hold the patch without it relying on the gypsum too mutch. A bigger patch will just come loose.

ceiling....hmmmff..

I have to sand the ENTIRE HOUSE....ceilings and walls..

Like the guys said...the portions that have peeled back down to the "brownish" looking paper...they will have to be mudded over very thin with a 12" trowel, then feather the edges to get it smooth... then sand it to get the high spots out.
