Good article RE immmigrants in America - NOT politically correct!!
Found this on another site and feel that it’s well worth passing on!! Original author
unknown, this is where I spotted it: http://www.f150world.com/forums/topi...ze=20&id=67794 Quote:
SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT! Hip Hip Hooray!! Finally, someone has said what I think has been on every American's mind!!!!! This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a local newspaper.
"IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT!!"
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture, here in the USA. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans.
However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants.
However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.
This idea of America, being a multi -cultural community, has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own
society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.
We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! ENGLISH.
"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, of Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is and always will be part of
our culture.
If the Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. Remember, "Delta is ready when you are and they can have you there by
nightfall".
This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every
citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But, once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.
If you agree with this message, pass it on . If you don't agree, pass it on anyway. What
the heck! This is AMERICA, after all!

Saw this before and agreed with it then.
Agree even more now.
And why can't this country ask others to adopt the way way we are required to even if we are only visiting. Doesn't the same apply to them when they come over here???
This is important, more than I thought at first. My cousin is a language teacher that many corporations use to prep their execs before sending them over seas (usually to the USA). She not only knows the languages but also the customs and manners of the countries. Our always accomadating them and their beliefs is a major loss of face for the USA. And only begs for them to push harder and demand more concessions.
Sorry about the length of the reply.
Short story: HURRAH!!!!

Yes, we stopped speaking "the King's English" back in the late 1700's, if I remember correctly
If you want to move to any country in the world and make your home there, learn the language and customs of that country, don't try to make the country adjust to you.

| Talk about politically incorrect... wake up people. I too live in America, not your America but Central America. I consider myself Central American and do not refer to the whole of the Americas when speaking about my country. So, please, for the sake of clarity, specify United States of America or just simply USA when referring to your country. BTW, God Bless The USA and the rest of the Americas.

never seems to get old that one Quote: |

| theres a good song called "American English" by Idlewild
edit: thougt i might give some substance to my reply to avoid the inevitable backlash. Quote: |

| err...thats exactly NOT the reason the USA's like it is. People have emigrated there and taken a little bit of their country with them and added to the USA. What exactly would you say the customs of america are, and why have you got a problem with other people's lifestyles? Are they interrupting your life so greatly?
If so thats bordering on the philosophy of the Nazi party, not somethign good at all.
USA is good because its diverse. I say keep it diverse, keep mixing it up and it'll stay good.
btw i know i'm gonna get flamed by the conservatives...

keabe - Excellent point, thanks. One we tend to slip up on all too often. A resident of Canada, Mexico, Peru, or Argentina could also be considered an American.
But for most of the world, the term "American" is apparently defined as United states citizenry. And I'm guessing that some (if not most) Canadians, Mexicans, Peruvians, and Argentinians would be highly offended if called "American".
So rather than offending them, shouldn't we continue to use the term as it has come to be defined worldwide?
Lemon[H]ead - I didn't see any "we hate foreigners" tone in that article! IMO, the author is berating U.S. citizens for worrying too much about offending newcomers. Quote: |

| Little deja-vue here - I addressed a similar point elsewhere earlier today, so quoting myself: Quote:
I think "American culture" is the blending of all the cultures which have been brought here and have kinda been run through a mixer & diluted by one another over the years, creating something which bears little if any resemblence to the components. That's how I was taught the "melting pot" concept works. Thus, anyone "new" may bring wonderful, welcome additions - but any adapting to be done must be done by the immigrant, NOT by the existing "mix".
For example, I've a friend from India who brought his family here. He owns a small grocery store. (not a "convenience" store, full line of goods)
When he bought it, the neighborhood was kinda..concerned. But he fit in with us very well, and has proven himself to be a good neighbor. Speaks the language fluently at this point, as does his family. He's a asset to the community, and does good business because of it.
They have also brought with them the culture of their OLD homeland, and of their religion, and it shows in some of the types of merchandise stocked. (Curios, paintings, etc.) Now, people here are exposed to these things that they would NEVER see, as many simply wouldn't go to a store of strictly Indian goods.
However, another Indian merchant lasted about a year nearby, as he refused to become part of the community, rather expect US to understand & accept HIS ways. Didn't work, he went broke. Nobody hassled him, but nobody patronized him either.
Point being that if one wants to fit in, yet retain the "old" & share it, that ONE must do the "fitting in". Did anyone here inadvertantly offend my friend at some point? Did I? Most likely yes. But it was smart of him to understand that he must simply learn to accept the differences of his new environment rather than complain & attempt to make the environment fit his desires. Maybe the flag was offensive to him, ten years ago. NOW, he flys it proudly - and he ain't "faking it", I know him too well for that!
