Need help finding vintage car part
Good Morning all!
A friend of the family has a 1923 Ford 490. The other day he took the car out and ***KCHUNK*** the diff cracked. The thing with these old cars is the Diff and axle (Pretty much the whole assembley) is one piece. He is Mechanic and he belongts to a couple vintage auto clubs but he's still having troubles finding a new Diff. I've done a couple google searches and I'm gonna try some more today. Any 1 have any sites I can check or care to give a search a try??
Muchos Appreciatos
Al

I'd check out Hemming's Motor News, also Cars and Parts magazine.
Exactly what part cracked?

I'm not sure what it's called. Let me draw out the picture. I'll post back in a minute. When he told me, he said it was the differential that cracked.

This is what the part looks like (Just a rough drawing). If he said the differential I would assume he ment the two round peices in the middle. But he said he wanted the wholw assembly, Probable because it's all one peice.
Edit----
Ooops, let me resize that.
Here we go

Umm...It looks like you're drawing the whole rear axle assembly.
But what's that purple blob with the three black dots?
Has he disassembled the axle? Have you seen which exact part is actually cracked?
You're probably going to have to rebuild it. Chances of finding a good complete assembly are almost nil.

LOL @purple blob.
Not sure what it is. The black dots are for bolts. You're right, I am drawing the whole rear assembly, he called it a split rear end. That's what he is looking for. He doesn't want to rebuild (Now), he wants to leave that as a last resort. He has already found a couple that he can use for parts to re-build.
Sorry, I didn't see which part is actualy cracked. Quote: |

How about welding the pieces back together. I assume that finding a replacement will be pretty tough.
I found this on a google, no link to the owner though, maybe it can be useful. classified
i found nothing else though. There are people that can make that kind of repair, and it won't even be noticable. I would check into that option.

Yeah...Ford probably built over 29 million of those axles too. Most of them probably got melted down to build ships and tanks durring WWII.
If he's a good mechanic, he can rebuild it. You just gotta take it back apart about 3 times to get it all set up right. Without the factory jigs & fixtures (and all brand new parts!), it's the only way.
