I have a fully developed basement, and where my water comes into the house, a pipe comes up out of the ground. I found out that this pipe condensates, and boxes that are stored near this pipe have MOULD on the bottom of them. Worse yet - this is in a carpeted area about 1 foot from a wall, so my main concern is that there is mould under the carpet (as the carpet is damp) and HOPEFULLY not in the walls.

What should I do? Is this something to be concerned about?

If I want to rip up the carpet, could I do this myself - or should I call a professional? I really don't know the details on the dangers of mould, but I've seen too many "48 Hours" spots about mould.

[edit]

I've found some good 'getting rid of mould' tips on the net.. Apparently, as long as it's not widespread - it's okay to handle the cleanup yourself.

One thing you can do is put insulation around it, It will keep the moist air away from the pipe that causes the condensation.

Put a dehumidifier in the basement.
You can kill mold with bleach, unless it's really spores from the planet ziptock. You can also get stuff from like Home Depot that comes in a plastic container (like a giant thing of chip dip) that's supposed to help take the water from the carpet. Mold can't grow with out moisture.

if you do handle the cleanup try to breathe in as little as possible, some mold can be very dangerous when inhaled

We found green beans that had grown hairs (LMAO nasty) from being in the fridge for about a week

(felt like real hair too!)

cool...

There's carpet around it (hey! I didn't put it in. ) that I'll rip out, and I'll put foam insulation on the pipe.

Make sure when you insulated it, seal it up good and close to airtight as possible.
That way the moisture can't get under the tape and make it fall off.. also it needs to be very dry when you put it on..
