reference checking questions

I have been wondering this for awhile now.

When a person submits an application for rental of a home we are required to put references and such down so the credit check can be done on the applicant to see if they qualify for housing and not only that to see what kind of tenant the person is.

All that is fine and dandy for me as I know I have very good track record.

What im wondering is. Can a rental applicant request references from past tenants or somehwere so the tenant can find out what kind of landlord you'd be dealing with? Track records for timely responses to request for repairs and such. To find out of the landlord has good relations with past tenants or such.

I am wondering this cause Im tired of ending up with slack landlords that lie all too often and don't respond in timely manners and treat you badly.

Yes im looking for another place to live yet again.

Sure, you can ask. But I bet you wouldn't get the apartment. Landlords don't like problem tenants any more than tenants like problem landlords, and a sea lawyer isn't going to be popular with them.

That seems so one sided IMO. tenants get checked completely. But landlords don't have to provide references either.

What do you mean by a sea lawyer isn't going to be popular with them?

Even among sailors, lawyers had a bad reputation. Arguments that always seemed to be brought about by the same person were sure to earn that person the title of ‘sea lawyer’. Any discussion of legal matters aboard a ship was greatly frowned upon, so any calling of a name that included the term ‘lawyer’ was a disgrace for the person being referred to.
It is one-sided, but it's a seller's market.

You could always go knocking on doors and ask the next door neighbors what they know. Chances are if they have been there a while then they probably know the reputation of the lanlord...

CYA(cover your a$$). take pics of the place when you move in. and read over the lease agreement very carefully. i m no legal person, but i think a lease is like a contract, and is supposed to be adhered to by both parties. if there is something in the agreement that looks sketchy, i would avoid the rental.

as far as the landlords go,yea i d talk to the neighbors and see if the place has been rented to different familys frequently, etc. high turn over rate could be caused by landlord,or maybe from the very neighbor you are talking to.

or move to the UP of Mich. cheap rent, fairly good landlords for the most part, low crime rate, and lots and lots of trees and lakes.

but beware when winter comes.....

Hoope you can get a nice place with a nice landlord, Neo. I can remember your past rental woes.

Nobody should have to go through that.

Cheers
Mick

mickwish, ya i agree, ran out of time thus the reason in this dump. But I have time to my favor this time. Plan to find a house BEFORE putting in my 30 day notice. This way I have control of the situation.
