Cables comin'!

Well, back from five weeks away from home, and four weeks touring Eastern Australian with the family. Great fun, saw lots of touristy stuff, and the kids had a ball. But living out of suitcases, packing up and driving 300kms or so every day is tiring after a while. Nice to be home, even if I had to get straight back to work.

And the best thing is - I'm getting cable installed on Saturday! No more 28kbps dial up! Woo hoo!!!

A bit annoying though, cause the cable telco (Telstra - I can't get the good cable from Optus here) won't support if a LAN's connected, so I can only get it installed on a stand-alone PC, and then if I connect to my LAN they won't provide support anymore. So as soon as the cable guy leaves the house I have to configure my LAN for cable (I'll use an old P2 box as a router). Then we'll all be smokin'!!

And support will then have to be my usual - TechIMO, of course!

I'll post a few bandwidth numbers when I get it all set up.

Cheers
Mick

w0000h000000, Welcome to the Telstra broadband club You'll love broad band Mick! I'm loving it even though i'm with this b*tch of a ISP. Oh well, it wont matter anymore, Come the end of them month all of optus's plans will practically be the same as telstra....

Thats right, Optus, the only decent broadband provider in Australia is capping. Up until now there was no speed or download restrictions and now its been dropped way back to like 512 down and 128 up

Thats as bad as telstras!

Oh well

Congratulations!! One downside. When you're used to cable, going back to dial-up is very annoying. The "slow" pageloading, works on my nerve

Believe it or not, I'm actually in a new housing estate in the middle of the fifth largest city in Australia, but apparently due to some old phone cables leading to our new estate (used to be a school) we have really bad connections. Can't even get ADSL here at all!! So cable's my only option other than satellite (but you still pay dial-up charges for that - so no thanks!! )

I heard about Optus' changes TBC - must be a pain if you had the service before. But at least it's still faster than dial-up!

Cheers
Mick

SWEEEEETTT!! Cable rocks! I've had it for about two years now. Heck, it's even faster than the T1 connection I have at work (which is shared by the ENTIRE building).

Happy surfing!
