Widescreen dvds argh
what is it with them? i feel im being cheated when i rent dvds and all there is widescreen. i have a 27" tube and by golly i like all of the pixels to be used. am i out of the loop and everyone has a widescreen tv? does this bother anyone else? sure it keeps to the original aspect ratio but i feel cheated in a way.
maybe im just crazy.

I disliked it when I first got into DVDs.....I somehow figured you could change it....guess not
So on my 19" monitor, I just dealt with it
IMO, it was silly to make them that way. I mean, how many VHS movies are there like that?
Now with my Xbox, I can take it downstairs and watch it on our 32". Still don't like it though.

If they make the picture fit a traditional TV screen, you lose a lot of the movie off to the sides--i.e. you don't get to see the whole thing. I like it when movies are shown letterbox, 'cause then I'm really seeing the whole movie!

| lol, like a bird flying in the background on the very edge of the screen.
I don't recall any movie where having it "chopped" actually effected my viewing of the film.

Frankly it irritates me to no end. But you do miss some stuff if it is not widescreen. There are quite a few scenes in Matrix that you don't get the whole effect without widescreen.

Yes Im Very annoyed by Widescreen/letterbox dvds, Theres nothing I want to see on the sides of the screen. When you see a behind the scenes or on the set of a movie and you see the director watching what they just taped you never see him watching a widescreen verison, If he directs the movie in a square I figure it good enough for me to watch.
Most people buy a big screen tv and then letter box dvd cut off about $200 worth.
I also noticed that some TV shows(I think ER did and something else recently) started doing Widescreen format, I hate that.
If anyone has see the DVD of Jet Li's The One, You get to select if you want to watch fullscreen or letterbox, I watched the fullscreen a few times, and then thought Well Ill check out the letter box format started watching it and guess what I noticed: There was nothing more on the sides that I wanted to see and they cut part of the bottom of the screen off. (if you want to see what Im talking about its near the begining when they are showing who all the evil guy killed, they cut off the names on the bottom of the screen.
So they either filmed it with intentions of fullscreen and then cut part off and said lets add letterbox or thats the way is always is.
When Lord of The Rings comes out on DVD Im buying Full Screen Format.

Just use the zoom feature of the DVD player to take up the room.

Shows are starting to film that way because TV's are starting to come out with that format. Clearly it will be awhile before most people will have such TV's, but I'm looking forward to the day I'm able to get one. I love watching films, and I do like seeing the whole picture.

Although not all DVD players or TV have thhis function but as RayH stated before, you can use 4:3 shrink or zoom on either a DVD player or the TV set it self.

Alot of the Sony and Aiwa (Sony made) DVD players have a feature on them to change the ratio of the picture from Wide Screen to almost 4.3. I cant remeber what it is called but it is a great feature.
