SAT scores

What's considered a decent range nowadays? Not perfect but acceptable.

I think it's about 1200 to 1600 (the highest, although I've heard of even THAT being surpassed...but I think they cheated...)

850 is a sort of cutoff point around these parts. Anything above 1200 is definitely University-attracting stuff.

Yep, 850 or below and it is hard to get into school here (when I say here, I mean South Carolina). I would say over 1000 is decent, but would retake the test if anything is gotten below a 1200.

For what kind of college? For just a 'regular' state college that's not uber but not suckage (love my vocab?), the average is normally around 1000 (total).

Here is an EXCELENT guide for colleges....tells such things as what the mean SAT scores for 2000-2001 freshmen were (gives you good idea of what they accept) and their HS rankings (such as, what percentile were in the top 20%, top 50%, etc.), acceptance ratings.......we'll put it this way, this is the shiznay

Choose your college:
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/col..._dir/index.htm

For example, here is the University of Vermont (average college in VT, many go):
Quote:
2000-2001 Freshman Class Profile
Top 10 percent of high school class: 18%
Top 25 percent of high school class: 49%
Top 50 percent of high school class: 87%

SAT I scores (25/75 percentile):
Verbal: 520 - 610
Math: 520 - 620
Combined: 1040 - 1230
This is from the Admissions page.

I got a 520 on my verbal and 490 on math, w/o studying. I should probably take it again....but when I do go to college, I really don't care where and will probably just go to a smaller, more local college (Castleton State, if anyone cares) that is 45min away.

BTW, they are going to change the SAT in 2005 or so....it will have a harder math part and (what I like, not like it will apply by then..) a 20min timed essay. I am quite good at BS-ing essays under pressure....too bad it wasn't on this one...would've boosted my verbal score.

Well, I'm thinking of arriving at a number and offering my son something like the title to his truck or something like that if he reaches or betters it.. Give him something to think about and perhaps more reason to prepare and do well on the test. I'm not sure...

In YOUR opinion, how "good" is your son at this kind of thing (I hate the word "smart" in a situation like this..)? Don't have to answer that of course...only if you wanted some input on suggested score benchmarks.

I didn't think getting to 500 was that hard....heck, I skipped like 20 of the math questions because I didn't get them. I'd think that to be the the slackers score...with studying, I possibly could have put it to 600 for each (1200 total).

Good thinking. Let him know school pays off.

If he is an average/ above average student, I'd set the bar around 1100-1200. If he is an honor student, I'd think about 1400 or so.

Just a thought. Good luck!

3.7 but he never does any home work.
Thing is if I set the bar too high he won't bother. (I think,, sez he's not interested in college)

it's tough to make parental type decisions alone. ...
