I am reeling. The kid, not so long ago, was sitting in her own messy diapers and bugging me for the answers to her questions about the universe. Tonight, she was this beautiful self-assured young lady in a graduation gown. Freaked me out then, and still freaks me out now. Fine, so I'll make a thread about it!
We spent he afternoon at Alena's b/f parents house, (sorry, Wart,) sandwiches and sodas, then went to stand in line for good seats. People cheat around here, so while we were gettin' high on the hog at Danny's folks house, there was a couple of kids holding our place in line. We got there about 5:30, and walked to the head of it. Your faithful Knothead usually objects to this type of stuff, but...well, shoot.

Anyway, we got really good seats.
Finally, the long-winded Principal (is there any other kind?) gets done with his speechifyin', and the Valedictorians get to deliver their parting words. This young girl tore right into 9/11, and managed to make a pretty darn strong point about how we can get a lot done by working together...her male counterpart didn't fare quite so well....
Maybe it's just a bad idea to put and 18-year-old in charge of writing and delivering a speech that has to be
Big And Important... and call me mean and cynical, but I was hugging my guts to keep from cracking up...I mean, if the kid had talked about something heartfelt, it would have been fine, but no, the need to say Big And Important Words done did him in...(sample:
"High school was a time of friendships, a time of cameraderie...but most importantly, a time of learning.." GAAAK!) OTH, his delivery was so smooth, it seemed to me that he'll make a dandy politician. Hey, ho.
Anyway, Alena's b/f was one of 14 who recieved a medal for having an above 4.0 GPA...Alena missed it by not much...I think it was the math that did her in...that jazz did me in too...have you guys SEEN what they call high school math nowadays?
grrr. mumble, mumble... (I wasn't much help, there.

)
Oh, what the hey. A lot of it was huffery and puffery, and rightly so! This is a MAJOR rite of passage...and perhaps not just for the kids, either...(jeez, I think maybe I felt a few more hairs turn silver, HAHAHAHAH!! )
But anyways, they graduated. There was Alena, all beautiful, young, and with a nervous grin plastered on her young, pretty face.

And her father feeling like such a happy fossil!
So much life ahead of her...I wonder if she knows...God knows, this is a better generation that we were, or at least me, anyway...
Okay, enough already...but look at this beautiful face anyway....I do, but I'm still not used to it...
Yours, Todd
