What is an "islamist"

I thought that Islamist was one who follows the words of mohammad aka a muslim.

I heard quite a different definition today.

Islamist is very different from islamic or muslim.

Is this true???

so do you mean this is a term some Muslims have given to themselves that is shall we say for the sake of conversation...
Perhaps a more liberal group?
LIke here we have some religions that are less conservative Christians, not Fundamentalists but more liberal. Another term might be orthodox verses reformed??
As I said I've never heard the term I hope I'm not being really dense here..

So there are no "splinter" groups in your religion. Is that what you are saying? Or that you don't acknowledge anyone that is as still being Muslim?
