58th Anniversary of D-Day

June 6th, 1944.

Was watching History Channel the other night...between 30min and an hour, all beaches but Omaha were taken....Omaha took 1/2 a day.

Hitler's mighty Atlantic wall stopped the Allied armies for less than 1/2 a day. Quite possibly the greatest blunder in the entire war

I'll second that....there's fewer and fewer of them every day.

Hard to believe the heroism of the men that went ashore that day.

I'm currently reading "The Greatest Generation" and I highly recommend it. You can read it in bits and pieces, if you're not the long reading type.

It was right after D-Day that my dad joined the Navy. He lied about his age to get in, as he was over a year too young. Both his older brother & older cousin had joined the Army. The Army didn't believe dad was old enough, and sent him packing, but evidently the Navy did. They send him off on a supply convoy to the South Pacific.

While supplying another ship, their ship took a shell, and a bunch of guys went into the sea. Something took a chunk out of his leg as he went down, and they sent him home with a purple heart, at the ripe old age of 16 1/2 years old.

Both his brother and cousin made it back from Europe OK, but they don't like to talk about it. It must have been pretty gruesome where they were.

By the way, found this site:
http://www.isidore-of-seville.com/d-day/3.html

They have several audio clips of first hand accounts of men who landed on D-Day. Pretty riveting.
