math class question (high school)

For a person entering 9th grade. (algebra I completed with an ok grade) If they have a choice of taking these classes....

algebra I (honors) or geometry (gifted)

which would be best?

He tested out of algebra II on a proficiency test. Is it better to retake algebra I and II and gain more experience with it, or go fo it and take geometry?

Is Geometry easier than Algebra?

I realize this is a generalized question, I am looking for some advice, don't know what we'll do yet..... Thanks....

Take geometry. The practical applications are more evident.

If you've got any inclination into a career in science or technology, take both. Plus trig.

Algebra was more helpful to me than geometry, both in real life application and in preparing for higher level classes.

I don't know how your school handles the prerequisites, but geometry wasn't offered to us until sophomore year.

Here's how i did it (btw, all are honors courses):
9th: Algebra I
10th: Geometry and Algebra II/Trig
11th: Pre-calculus and statistics
12th: AP calculus

There were some people i knew who didn't have to do the whole doubling up thing in 10th grade because they tested out of Algebra I, but i was transferring from a hick county school that made me dumber just for attending it.

If they have any thought about going into any kind of science field I would have to recommend the algebra. If not science oriented, geometry (more practical for life). Definetly have them become very proficient in trig though. That and the algebra will really help later on in calc etc.

I thought that geometry was very helpfull when I got to calculus, as you first learn all the formulae that you must later derive.

Can they take both at the same time? Luckily I finished algebra I in 8th grade. But both SAT and ACT have quite a lot of algebra and geometry. So, ya need to be prepared

The school I go to lets me take numerous math classes at the same time.

My schedule (Hon./AP):
8th - algebra I
9th - geometry
10th - algebra II/trig
11th - pre cal/cal I/discrete
12th - cal II/III

Algebra is hands down the winner IMO...

I don't find much use of my knowledge of geometry. Not nearly as much as algebra. That's in both my field and in life.

Algebra II all the way.

Geometry... I never took it at all, my mom homeschooled my brother and I and said "yeah, they've had it" (both my brother and I) so we could skip straight to pre-calculus, which is basically just advanced geometry in my opinion.
