Should we get rid of nukes (do they have a positive use)

Outside of a deterant value do nukes have a value.

I am a Sci-Fi buff and I keep thinking of the old asteroid thingy.

What could we do if a little manhattan size asteroid decided to drop in for a visit.

Now I know it aint like the movies but it is like the only chance we would have to avoid the big thud.

Should we ever eliminate all nukes or should we stop making bigger and bigger ones.

IMO I think we should keep on refining the technology. Whatcha think.

I'm against any form of un-funny violence!

By that i mean i dont like seeing anyone really die! I love movies about killing but not real life!

I think that a weapon of that distruction should be taken off the face of the earth.

I think they should be put down before someone loses an eye!

As a deterant i can see that as a agreeable reason but it isn't a deterant toa terrorist state! You cant nuke them! They arn't effectively countries and sadly you can't tactically nuke someone! If you nuke someone your going to nuke alot more than just them!

Really the only thing they are a deterant against are another counrty and in the modern world for a country like america to launch one of these bad boys they would have to be deadly serious, Once you nuke something there is nothing you can do to fix the problems caused!

I hope never to see another nuke used in my life time!

I agree with your statement. about using them against a terrorist state. But what of a non terrestrial problem.
What of the value in the defense of life on earth as we know it?

If we ever get our space legs together well enough to see a NEO (near earth object) and to plant a nuke on it far enough away from earth to divert it. would that be worth the risk of having them.

Note we have had several close calls in the past 10 years the closest one was a mere 200,000 miles from impact.

Had it hit it would have been worse than all polution we have ever put into the environment.

Should we work on technologies like in armagedon to be able to launch a mission to a NEO and blow it to Kingdom come. Would it be worth the investment.

If everyone got rid of them then it would work. But as it is if we get rid of them the terrorists have the upper hand. Bush's missle deffense system might be a step in the right direction. Make nukes pretty much useless, and then get rid of all of ours. We can't be hurt by them and we can't hurt other people with them. Then other countries might get rid of theirs! Someone has to start, and since we are the biggest baddest, and coolest country in the world I belive we should set the example by putting in defenses that will stop nukes, and getting rid of our nukes.

so as for the extra terrestrial threats you believe that there is none and that they could not be used in defense of the earth from big flying rocks that would create an extinction of all higer organisms.
