I played for 13 years. I played 2 to 3 times a month. In 2 different states. It was a blast. But the cost can add up fast. When my son got old enough to play. My field fees and his added up to more than I could afford. With the two of us. The fees came to around $125. every time we went out.
Does the term high volume mean anything. The two of us used a half case of paints balls a day. That is 1250 paint balls. If my brother and his wife went along double that.
When you start playing. Don't stay at one field. Move around. Each field has different playing styles. The more fields you can play on against different players. The more you can learn. On smaller fields you can set up your own games if you get a group of your own people to play. This works if you know them good. You just shoot anyone your don't know.
As far as guns. Tippman is one of the better guns for a beginer. It will shoot all day long with very little or no problems. Get a semi gun. You can shoot and scoot at the same time.

Dump the short factory barrell. Get a custom barrell. Something around 14" seems to be the best trade off. It gives good range and it handles good in tight quarters. A pistol for backup is a good idea if the field allows it. Some fields only allow one gun. But on the ones that did I also carried a pistol. Inside buildings the pistol was a better option. It handled a lot faster. I started playing before rifles were being made so. I can handle the pistol very well.
I haven't played for about 5 years now. (My gun was stolen). But my son still plays a few times a year.
As far a web sites. Just go to google and type in paint ball. You will get many sites under that term.
