An international team set a new record for Internet performance by transferring the equivalent of an entire compact disc's contents across more than 7608 miles (12,272 km) of network in 13 seconds. The rate of 401 megabits per second achieved in transferring 625 megabytes of data from Fairbanks, Alaska to Amsterdam in the Netherlands is over 8000 times greater than the fastest dial-up modem.

Such a connection would be much appreciated here.

At low price of course.

I thought that Internet 2 was not supposed to be released to the general pop for many moons.

Modern internet backbones are capable of Gbps transmissions...

Optical Carrier 48 (OC-48) lines can transfer 2.4Gbps...
Optical Carrier 192 (OC-192) lines can transfer 10Gbps, but it's rare that you'll find a facility with a fully lit OC-192..

Epidemic - It's not. I wasn't really thinking of the context of the post when I submitted that. That would indeed be the fastest xfer over the internet. However, Internet2 is capable of far greater. There was a good article in Discover a few months back about what they are doing with it. Total 3D immersion, full speed, scalable video conferencing, remote seminars, etc. Pretty interesting stuff. Well to me anyhow.
