What are your favorite quotes?
What are your favorite quotes (by famous people), and what is your favorite personal quote (that you live by)?
Here are some of mine:
"It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded." -- Anne Morrow Lindbergh
"The battles that count aren't the ones for gold medals. The struggles
within yourself are where it's at." -- Jesse Owens
"If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again. Then give up. There's no use being a damned fool about it." -- W.C. Fields
"Don't worry about what someone else has or does better because everyone is too obsessed about themselves to care about what anyone else is doing." -- Ron Ablang

Any quote related to Dean Carmann.
Columbia University had built a Dorm--and solicited Donations for the "naming" of the Hall. In the interim, it was named "New Hall".
This practice of selling "Naming Rights" didn't start with Stadiums. Universities and Hospitals have been doing it for a long time.
The asking price was $7,000,000 I heard.
It didn't get it. So it named it in honor of Henry Carmann (Karrmann?) --a long-time former Dean of Columbia College.
Ah ! College students. One genius decided to scribble some graffitti on the wall, like "A Carmann in time saves nine". Another decided to follow suit with , like, "Tippicannoe and Carmann too". Which was followed by "To be or not to be, that is the Carmann". You get the picture....
Well, eventually Two problems presented themselves:
A) It was increasingly difficulty to find a 'saying' that hadn't been used; and
B) it became increasingly difficult to find space--anywhere , even on the ceilings--for a "Carmann Quote"
To this day I remember the waste of University money to repaint Carmann Hall.
"A jug of wine, and thou, Ah ! Wilderness, thou art DOOOOG anon "

One of my favorite quotes is "Oh oh, Spegetti Oh!"
I was the one who originally coined the phrase "I will be on you like a fly on sh@t!"
I should get some kind of royalty for this.

"She's as sweet as a honey suckle lump on a log in February"
--Jim Beard, an old southern friend of mine.
Also, while I was enjoying some beef jerky at his house he couldn't stop smiling...I said, "Jim, what is so funny about me eating beef jerky?"
His quote, "It's COON!" |
