Quick reminder about hot linking.

Just a quick reminder..
I've noticed quite a bit of hot linking recently, some folx may not know this, or some may have forgotten, that's why I bring this up.

Hot linking is not allowed at the TechIMO Forums.
If you have an image you wish displayed in your post, you must have the image on your website, and link to it from there.
The reason being, every time the thread is viewed if there is a hot linked image, bandwidth is used from that site where the image is stored to send the picture.

If you do not have a personal website, I know there used to be sites that will allow you to hot link. If you look for a free site, I would look for a site that caters to people who sell on E-bay.

If anyone has any hot links in threads recently would you please remove them?

Thanks everybody..
surreal

Just to clarify as I was thinking of a different definition of a "hot link" then what surreal is referring to. She's referring to making images visible on the boards and not just a text link to the image.

The definition of hot linking as it pertains to this discussion

(btw, this is hosted on my personal space for my ISP )

Wow, I guess I'm guilty many timers over. My apologies! I'll have to learn HTML to get my personal site going...I'm on cable and our free 10mb of webspace requires HTML knowledge. Anyone know where I can get quick lessons? Thanks and sorry Surreal! I won't do it again, I promise!!!

Thanks for posting the reminder surreal.

When members use the [IMG][|IMG] tags to insert pics directly into their messages (hotlink), the hosting website has to re-serve the image to TechIMO everytime someone opens the thread. Especially with large images or threads with lots of views, this can steal alot of bandwidth from the host sites.

Members should only "hot-link" to images that are stored on their own webspace unless they have the expressed permission of the hosting site's webmaster.

Martoch, you can upload an image to a site w/o html.. its only html that displays the image.. none of the images I've put up here are anywhere on my non existent page on my isp LOL
They're just uploaded up there
Just use FTP to upload them, get the URL and put it in an img tag here
Oh and you can find a number of html tutorials online ... just do a search for "html tutorial"

Hey Martoch, are you sure you only get 10MB of space? I'm also on cable (ATTBI) and we also get 10MB of space for web pages...but many don't realize that we get 10MB of web space for each email address, and we can have up to 6 email addresses...which obviously means we really get 60MB of web space.

It's a directory and some folders..
