Illegal for minors to buy/rent violent games? Check out this news article

http://msn.com.com/2100-1106-899612.html

I'm 23, so I don't have to worry about this, but I still think its ridiculous... Could you imagine how much piracy would be going on if a bill like this passed?

They have been pushing this for awhile. It started out with cds and im not surprised it moved to video games. I mean look at gta 3. You can have sex with a hooker in a car, and then beat her after to get your money back. Also there a game that came out in Britain called riots or something and the media was all over it. Because it’s about people rioting. Games don't make people violent IMHO.

They say that characters in FPS's are "Rapists, murderers, car jackers and theives." Hmmm, I just got done playing JKII and the main character doesn't fit that description. These idiots don't understand that people, even teenagers, understand that killing is wrong, but there is a difference between actually unloading a gun into a flesh-and-blood person and shooting at a computer-based entitiy.

Well you got to remember. When the shootings in school happened what did they blame? DOOM and heavy metal bands. These bills are brought up by people who want to blame videos games and other things than on the person. And it makes me sick. "Oh lets blame this or that, because Johnny would NEVER ever pick up a gun and have the thought to shoot someone” those people are in denial and need to get out of the shell they live in.

I won't let my kids watch 'R' rated movies unless I see them first, and watch with them, and by law they cannot rent them at the video rental shop, or buy them in the store (if the clerks are doing their job). Just like they can't go into a theatre to watch these movies.
I think this is appropriate.

Likewise, my kids are not allowed to play excessivley violent games until they reach an age I think they can handle it.
I think it is also appropriate that they should not be allowed to buy or rent these games without my consent. I think it was great when they started putting ratings on the boxes, and this is the next logical step to help parents keep inappropriate materials out of the hands (and PCs) of their children. I support age limiting of mature software whole heartedly.

Piracy is not a concern. My kids each have their own PC, and I carefully monitor what they do with them. There will be no pirated games over their age here.

Maybe when some of you have children of your own, you will understand...

Maybe your right since I am only 19 years old, but since I was little I have always seen violent movies, played violent games and watched rated R movies. It’s not because my parents let me. I went to friends houses and did it. And you know what? I turned out pretty well I think. You can’t control everything your kid does. Kids will find a way around it and this bill will only limit buying. Big fricken whoop. No real loss there. It always depends on the maturity of the kid. I know 6 years who are more mature than 15,16,17,18 and so forth.

Question Kruzin do you watch the news with your children in the room? If so there is more violence in the news than in any of those little video games. Violence is part of humanity. Sadly we have to live with it, as some humans still have not evolved passed the ape stage. Now im not saying that if you enjoy violent video games, (hell I love them, I play counterstrike all the time and I love being a terrorist) that you are an ape. Game creators put out things that sell. Hell you don’t see Barney playground adventure on the top 10 list of teens x mas wish list. Okay I have gone on to much.

I do watch the news with my kids in the room. And while the news can tell about violent acts, it does not show these acts happening (at least not with the detailed gore you see in games), or put the viewer in the role of the person commiting those violent acts. I think there is a big difference.

It also gives me the chance to talk to my kids about what goes on in the world.
Example:
We where all watching the news one morning before I took them to school. That day was 9-11. We watched live as the second plane impacted tower1.
At first, my son thought it was a fictional movie, and it was the coolest thing he'd seen for a long time (wow, great special effects...that looked real). When he saw the tears in my eyes, he knew it was real. We had many talks about that, and many other things we see on the news. I don't think it can really be compared to video games...they are very different things.

I am not against violent games. I'm a hard-core fragger myself. I look forward to the day my kids are old enough to join me in a good session of UT or TFC. Untill then, I am perfectly happy racing them in Monster truck maddness or NFS.

oh don't get me wrong kruzin i wasn't trying to pick on you or anything. i think that kids shouldn't be allowed to view gore or any of that until there are able to understand that. and when i get kids i know the stuff that i have seen on the internet will NOT be viewed by my kids. i will try my damn hardest to limit some things that they can access. some things have age limits like you said. and of course exposing to certain materail at a certain age can cause harm.

sometimes its hard to find people with good parental skills.

You could also think of violent games as a way for people to vent anger so that they don't vent it on someone in real life. Just a thought.
