color matching question

I am remodling (moving to a new location) the kitchen and we have selected a wood laminate plank for the floor.Now it is time to select a color for the cabinet.What is the general rule for cabinet color(wood finish),darker or lighter than the floor color?My thought was lighter with a darker countertop?

That seems to be very popular nowadays, though my house (built in the 50's) is just the opposite. Light floors, light counters, dark cabinets.

Personally, I like the whitewashed oak look for cabinets, and granite-look Corrian for counters. OK, real granite if you can afford it. Both my wallet & floors would collapse from granite.
