Hats off to Home Depot!
I was a dedicated Lowe's shopper until recently when I discovered how customer oriented the people at Home Depot are...a few friends of mine suggested that I check it out, so I did. Wow, talk about customer service...they don't just point you down 5 aisles to the left, they walk you there and show you the product you're searching for! I was amazed at how willing they are to help...hats off to Home Depot!

One thing I noticed about Lowes....as far as building supplies go....they suck...
If I go to get 6 can light fixtures....they will have 5.
If I need 50' of pipe they will have 45'. They never have enough...and none of their building supplies show up on their internet site....well, neither does home depot...
I have noticed they are more interested in selling "other" stuff rather than building supplies..Like they used to be years ago..

Home Depot is also one of the few businesses that preferencially buy lumber from environmentally sound forestry practices. If you've got to buy it, I would buy it there. No rainforest wood, no BMP or whatever ignoring ultra-density pine plantations, good stuff...

In this area at least it seems to be the other way around re: customer service/stock avaliabilty. 80-90 % of our local Lowe's
staff is reasonably knowedgable and enthusiastic. While our local Home Depot obviously encourages customer service the majority of their staff knows less than my 10 year old grandson. This is based on observation btw. As they both respond to a contractor a little differently/more quickly.
I've pretty well come to the conclusion that a lot of the differences are based on the individual store management

My experience has also been better with Lowes. The store is much cleaner, neater, well laid out, newer, staff very friendly and helpful- one dude spent 45 minutes with me for a two buck pipe fitting- they have a no questions asked return policy (HD does too in fairness) and the shopping experience was really good. Not that HD was bad. But Lowes was better.
Guess it depends on the store and the local management.

Well, here's one I've never seen..
I ordered a ceiling fan from Expo, which is a division of home depot. A new spinoff of more upscale stuff for the foo foo customer. Anyway I ordered this fan on the web awesome deal.. A hundred dollar Hunter fan for 24.99 (closeout) Anyway I got an email telling me they made a mistake and were out of stock. They did not charge my card.
To make up for my inconvience they were sending me a 25.00 gift card to be used at home depot or Expo. Kewl!

Home depot in the New York metro area is the worst in service. I would rather go to the local Ace hardware to pick something up and pay extra or drive to Pennsylvania to go find a Lowe's.
When you go to one that is open 24hrs, guaranteed there is a long line in the wee hours with one cashier open and somebody is holding up the line for a price check on an unmarked nut or bolt.
I gotta say Home Depot is good for browsing to get ideas on the stuff out there to fix your house though. Just don't ask anyone to help you.
