Simon and Garfunkel
I was listening to the Sounds of Silence earlier.....man, that is a very deep song for it's time. In an age of candy-coated romance music, this one really stands out. I'm still not sure what it means.....the dedgradation of society? Anyone have an idea? Quote:
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision
That was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
Beneath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed
By the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share...
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools," said I, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows."
"Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed in the wells of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said: "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls,
And whisper'd in the sound of silence."

In 8th grade, my G/F was pretty gaga about "The Sounds of Silence." It's about crying out against an indifferent materialistic society. Something we all did in the 60's. (Then we all joined it by the 80's but that's another story...)
I got pretty burned out on Simon & Garfunkel myself.
I think I've heard The Boxer about 5 million times. Leesee...that works out to about once every four minutes for the past 30 years.

You may want to read into it more than there appears to be on face value, but I thought the words were fairly self explanitory.
It is, for me at least, as Cadd suggests (although I wouldn't have used those words), a plea for people to realise that we are becoming more and more insular, less community oriented.
They are my all time favourite duo, one of my favourites is "For Emily whenever I may find her" (Parsley sage rosemary and thyme), a simple compelling lovesong.
I was told that Paul Simons poetry was actually used as teaching material in schools.
I never tire of hearing their tracks, most of them anyway, another one for the uninitiated, is Old Freinds (Bookends), that gets me thinking and all introspective.
You have to listen to the words
You have to listen to the words
You have to listen to the words
You have to listen to the words
