Uncle Sam's Canoe Club aka US Navy

Schofield DEG-3 'Nam Evacuation and Mayaguez Incident
Sterret CG-31 local ops
New Orleans LPH-11 One WestPac ready reserve with 1,800 crazy Marines aboard ready to fight the Commie hordes. Sure wouldn't want to go up against that crazy bunch.

Impossible to describe life aboard a warship, especially during that era.

Quit trying to describe Olongapo, Philippines.

Stopped relaying tales except when swapping sea stories with ex-sailors... too hard for most to believe and few civilians can understand, or care.

Still vividly recall the debriefing with two officers present just before discharge. Twenty years and up to $250,000 fine for revealing certain affairs, operations, etc.

Did drop a SEAL team into 'Nam. We didn't retrieve them. Always wondered what happened to those gutsy guys who were headed into an area held by a division of regular NVA.

Oh... Sonar Tech and lots of shore patrol and other gung ho duties.

The week in Thailand made up for a lot of BS. That place really "sticks" in one's mind.

Interestingly, the elite classes' kids were noticibly absent from our ranks.

One day was in the South China Sea steaming in circles. A few day's later back in the states, walking around in a daze that lasted for months. A very bizarre period.

Anyone else experience disorientation or whatever after returning from overseas?

Milo1009 is infamous around these parts
Air Force 1952-1956, Served in Japan and Korea as an Aircraft Mechanic (C-47s). Got out in July '56 then in December signed on as a civilian employee. Stayed with it for another 33 years before retiring in 1989. Along the way I worked on B-25, T-33, T-37, and T-38 aircraft and J-33, J-69, and J-85 engines before becoming a Quality Control Inspector. Later on I crossed over into the safety field and ended up as Chief of Safety for a Major Air Command.

All in all a great experience, traveled to many countries, worked many long hard hours, enjoyed the camaraderie, and look back on the terribly cold weather in Korea living in tents as a worthwhile experience. Sure there were some bad spots but I would certainly do it all again....

To those currently serving, I salute you and hold you in my prayers.

Rusting Away FLA is infamous around these parts
USS Eisenhower, USS Saratoga, USS America, USS Roosevelt // Don't miss the Navy too much, but do miss the friends and many of the places I've visited over the years.
