Impossible to describe life aboard a warship, especially during that era.
Quit trying to describe Olongapo, Philippines.
Stopped relaying tales except when swapping sea stories with ex-sailors... too hard for most to believe and few civilians can understand, or care.
Still vividly recall the debriefing with two officers present just before discharge. Twenty years and up to $250,000 fine for revealing certain affairs, operations, etc.
Did drop a SEAL team into 'Nam. We didn't retrieve them. Always wondered what happened to those gutsy guys who were headed into an area held by a division of regular NVA.
Oh... Sonar Tech and lots of shore patrol and other gung ho duties.
The week in Thailand made up for a lot of BS. That place really "sticks" in one's mind.
Interestingly, the elite classes' kids were noticibly absent from our ranks.
One day was in the South China Sea steaming in circles. A few day's later back in the states, walking around in a daze that lasted for months. A very bizarre period.
Anyone else experience disorientation or whatever after returning from overseas?
